"Freckles" . . . my little pet cow

ceejay48	Posted - Feb 19 2016 : 2:06:53 PM Hi farmgirls, As many of you know by some of my previous threads, my hubby and I have a hobby herd (small!) of Longhorn cows. We had a very snowy winter and we had to start feeding hay just before Christmas, whereas last winter was mild and they were able to forage in their vast pasture. These photos were taken this week, after a MAJOR melt off of snow! "Freckles" is a heifer that was one-year old in December. She has started coming to the fence for handouts and I, of course, have obliged her. So now my hubby calls her "my little pet cow". What is interesting about this photo is that her momma, is directly behind her ... with the horns. "Freckles" is naturally polled and doesn't have horns, but in this photo it looks like she does ... not so, they are her mom's! "Beautiful" is a heifer that is 9-months old and she comes to the fence only once in a while, but this same day she did come and my hubby was giving her a handout. Her mom is the white longhorn in the left background. The dark cow on the right, a steer, is the next one in line for the freezer. I was able to give them to her yesterday both in the morning and evening. Today, our neighbor feeds the cows so I won't see her! Beautiful is more wary! The rest of them will hardly let you touch them . . . oh well!
