Hi farmgirls,
As many of you know by some of my previous threads, my hubby and I have a hobby herd (small!) of Longhorn cows. We had a very snowy winter and we had to start feeding hay just before Christmas, whereas last winter was mild and they were able to forage in their vast pasture. These photos were taken this week, after a MAJOR melt off of snow!

"Freckles" is a heifer that was one-year old in December. She has started coming to the fence for handouts and I, of course, have obliged her. So now my hubby calls her "my little pet cow". What is interesting about this photo is that her momma, is directly behind her ... with the horns. "Freckles" is naturally polled and doesn't have horns, but in this photo it looks like she does ... not so, they are her mom's!

"Beautiful" is a heifer that is 9-months old and she comes to the fence only once in a while, but this same day she did come and my hubby was giving her a handout. Her mom is the white longhorn in the left background. The dark cow on the right, a steer, is the next one in line for the freezer.

By the way, the "daddy" to these little girls became a troublesome nuisance and he got turned into a lot of really tasty hamburger!

So cute! Did you breed her to be polled? A friend of ours has a longhorn he leads around.

I was gone for a week and my hubby tells me that Freckles REALLY missed me and my personal handouts to her! Silly cow!
I was able to give them to her yesterday both in the morning and evening. Today, our neighbor feeds the cows so I won't see her!

And, Winnie, if you came to see me you could meet them all up close and personal . . . even do some handfeeding yourself! :D

I don't know how lovable they are, because you can't get very close to them. Mary Jane is able to hug her cows!
But, Freckles allows me to hand feed her. Beautiful is more wary! The rest of them will hardly let you touch them . . . oh well!

Such sweet animals CJ! I miss feeding my Grandpa and Great Uncle's cows which I used to do all the time when I was a kid. There's just something about making a connection with a lovable bovine that can't be beat.

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

I love your "Beautiful". Her colors are very nice. I can see how the picture of "Freckles" is confusing. Before I read the words I thought it was her horns! Longhorns are my favorite!

My hubby took the pic of Freckles on my phone and when I showed it to him he laughed because of how it looks like she has her momma's horns.

Of course, I laughed at Beautiful with her long tongue stuck out there!
