Does anyone have experience with using garlic for flea & tick control on their dogs? My GSD is about 75-80lbs.
I recently lost my dog to a vaccine reaction, so I am closely researching any vaccines/maintenance we put on our new dog. Topical flea & tick is a huge risk! I did not realize this until now, if you use these, please research and decide for yourself. I have decided not to use topicals and try alternatives, and hope I can get some feedback here :).

Definitely understand not wanting all the chemicals. And I'm with you on the shots. I lost my girl recently to I don't know what. I will definitely do things a bit different with the next fur baby. Though she was 13 and the average age of her breed is 14 so we felt it had a lot to do with her age too. If you can go natural it is the best you can give them.

Unfortunately, all the vets I have encountered really push the chemical flea & tick, and they poo-poo the herbals. I am ordering the garlic pills from http://www.springtimeinc.com/product/bug-off-garlic-chewables-dogs-natural-flea-tick-prevention-supplements to try. I still give him regular heartworm.
It is a gamble, I realize that. BUT, I just lost my soul dog to unexpected complications, and no one wants to be responsible and give the eXACT ingredients that may have caused his death.
I see it the same way I see "picking" vaccines for my kids. They get one at a time, and only the ones I think are necessary. Things that are treatable will not be vaccinated. We do not get flu shots. I have decided to do the same for my dog. Instead of loading him up with chemicals & pesticides, I look for alternatives where I can see a treatment. Heartworms is not something I am willing to gamble with.

I am watching him closely, thank you for mentioning it. I do know that garlic can cause upsets & side effects in dogs. I know more now about side effects than I ever thought possible!

Please be careful using garlic with your dogs. It can cause kidney damage and it doesn't take much to do it. Do research before giving your dog anything. There are many things that we eat and one would think if we eat it, it must be okay for a dog but please be careful and double check. There are lots of good sites online to check if you don't have a vet to ask.

Rachel, do you live in a "tick area"? We are getting them here more more :(.
I just ordered Valor some natural beef liver & garlic pills, should make dosing easy and I will pretend they are snacks :).

I add garlic powder to the herbal mix that I give my dogs for parasites (or all kinds). I can't tell you how much to give for your dogs weight though since I just mix mine in bulk and give a spoonful-ish with food to each of my dogs. I have read to not use garlic because of potential stomach problems, but I have not noticed this with any dogs that I've ever used it for (or any of our other critters either).
