It has been a long time since I posted! In June we added another Heritage Hog to our gang, Bitsy,a Red Wattle Hog.Her registered name is Big Red of Cheddar Creek but we liked Bitsy and she took to it right away:) She is also an endangered Hog breed. When we got her she was already bred and a week ago Wednesday she farrowed and gave us 10 babies:) Five boys and five girls:)

We are going to keep one for breeding and it just happens to be number 8 who crawled into my lap and took a nap after being born. I named her Crumpet:)

Here are some pics.

A day before farrowing:

Bitsy and babies:)

Our girl Cookie stayed in the shelter the whole time and was so good! When the little ones strayed away from mama, Cookie nudged them back:)

Michael and Crumpet, he is such a softy and keeps a radio in the farrowing shelter (which he calls the nursery:)) and plays classical music for them:)

Me and Crumpet:)

So precious! And they will be so cultured with the classical music! I think that's what the expression " hog heaven" means!

Happy Day!

anything you can teach a dog, you can teach a pig 5 times faster, and once they learn, they never forget...love pigs...

Heather, Bitsy trusts us and I think that has alot to do with it, in addition to Cookie's demeanor. We try to spend as much time as we can with our pigs so they are more docile and trusting (I'm sure that you are that way with your cows:)) And when hogs farrow they sort of fall into a 'trance' so maybe that's why too! And yes, Crumpet is already spoiled:)

Dawn, thank you!!! I'm glad that you were reminded of your grandfather. Pigs really are alot of fun and act so much like dogs:)

Thank you Michele!!! They are all doing great and eating solid food in addition to nursing:) Not to mention exploring!

Congratulations! I love the pictures. My late grandfather was a hog farmer and these pictures bring back my memories of him.

Thank you,

Looks like Crumpet's getting spoiled already :) Do Bitsy and Cookie always get along like that? Our cows don't like any other animals around their babies. Thanks for sharing your pictures. I think piglets are SO cute!!!
