Posted - Sep 20 2015 : 6:42:44 PM Hello! Kind of strange request but trying to determine about how much to charge per pound hanging weight. We raise black angus, 99.5% grass/hay fed. No hormones or antibiotics, minimal vaccines at least a year before butchering. I have seen most charge $3 to $4 lb hanging weight plus processing. Does this sound right? First year selling steers and want to be fair to buyers and ourself. We are thinking $3.50.
Just wondering if in the ballpark.

Posted - Dec 07 2015 : 06:45:25 AM Rae, you're probably off to a great start by getting your name out there. I'll bet that your customers will be returning for more and your name will get passed around and you'll get more customers.
I agree with your statement that people are willing to pay a higher price, especially if the buyer feels like they are supporting a local farmer. There is a definite benefit of forming that local reputation and relationship.

We will probably stay there or a bit higher next time, depending on market. People really want grass fed beef and knowing where it comes from, we have a waiting list for next time around! Market dropped here this fall, too many people held off to sell and market pretty flooded. Of course that doesn't last and many small farms have died in our area #128546;

Posted - Dec 06 2015 : 7:58:52 PM $3.50 is fair but don't undersell yourself if the market can bear a higher price. Down here in my part of Texas, grass fed, dry aged beef is $4-$4.75 dressed weight and then extra for processing.
Here's a basic list of prices from the ranch that I buy my beef from: Ground $8/lb Roasts $6/lb Cubed/Stew meat $8/lb Steaks range from $10-$15 depending on the cut

That sounds about right to me. My husband’s uncle sells his from anywhere between $2.50 and $3.00 depending on the year and availability.

Posted - Sep 20 2015 : 7:28:39 PM Rae, I think you are very much in the ballpark. You're in a different area than us but we are selling beef as well and are asking $2.50 per pound hanging weight, plus 50 cents per pound processing . . . total would be $3.00 per pound.
