Hi everyone! Well, I mentioned in my Welcome Wagon post that I am from Chicago and just moved to Washington, where I am staying with family members and cannot quite start a farm of my own... but I've made some friends with their own livestock! Today I got to help a new friend trim her goats' hooves! She has 11 goats. We had to her them all into the shelter (with the help of a border collie who was a little confused because he learned commands in Turkish and we don't speak Turkish... long story...) and then take them out one at a time, take them over to get weighed, and while my friend was trimming their foods I gave them some dewormer mixed with grain and petted them and kept them calm. Then we had to bribe them to go into the other pasture so they wouldn't gather around to point and laugh at whichever of their friends was getting his or her hooves trimmed at the moment! It was so much fun, and I was at the peak of my happiness! Here are some pictures of me with the goats, after all their hooves were finished.
Here is me with Benjamin, who is one of the "tamest" goats my friend has, because he was bottle fed and raised like a dog for the first few months of his life. (By the way, my friend rescued him, and most of her other goats, from people who no longer wanted them and were either going to get rid of them or eat them!)

Here is me with two more goats. I can't remember their names, but the one I am petting actually butted me in the arm earlier because I ran out of peanuts to feed him! But it was more of a nudge than a butt. Like, "You'd better feed me or you'll be sorry... I have HORNS!"

I hope I get to go help out with the goats again! And someday I would like a goat of my own. |

Great photos! You do look happy, farmgirl! I love goats, though I don't have any. A friend of mine has a goat farm/rescue. I've been there to help her bottle feed some of the babies...Oh my Goodness! Baby goats are the cutest too! Have fun...looking forward to seeing more pics/posts!

Nikki, great pics and so glad you had the opportunity to work with the goats. I really like goats and miss having them.
Years ago I had 3 African pygmy goats that were given to me by a man who got his start from Six Flags Over Texas petting zoo. As the kids matured Six Flags sold them.

Hi Nikki! Sounds like you had a great farmgirl day. And don't you worry - if I can be a farmgirl, anyone who really wants can be one too (I was a NYC girl until 28 years of age). Goats are a great livestock for newbies as they are hardy and relatively easy to care for (as long as you have good fencing!).
I love goats and have owned 3-18 goats for the last 16 years. They have all been mostly Nubians. I used to sell goats milk at one time, although I now only own a few goats as pets and organic lawn mowers. In fact, when 9/11 happened back in 2001, I will never forget where I was. I was in the barn doing the morning milking of 10 dairy goats. Thank goodness because caring for those animals is what kept me from falling apart that day.

Nicki, I am glad you are having a chance to volunteer with farm animals! One day you will have a place where you can have some animals of your choosing and really get into raising them. My daughter raises a small herd of Lamancha dairy goats for milking and cheese making. She dehorns hers for safety for herself and her herd. They can hurt one another if they get into a fight and then you have a vet bill on your hands. Have fun when you can get out to the farm!
