One of our chicks got bit by a small dog an hour ago. We've put her in a separate box under the heat light, and applied hydrogen peroxide to the wound. From what I can see it isn't still bleeding. Taking her to a vet is not an option for us and she's only two months old. I'm pretty upset right now. We only have 6 and I don't want this one to go. I am feeling very discouraged and angry. Any advice, things to look for, I just don't really know what to do.

Wonder Dust is a medicated powder from Farnam. It says it's for horses and show stock. I've used it on all my animals at on time or another and never had any issues. I bought it at the farm store. (I don't remember which one - we shop at 3 different ones - TSC, Rural King and Big R) It is a white plastic bottle with a blue label and a yellow, mustard-bottle-type of cap. Just used it on a dog that we are petting sitting because my dog bit his ear. Stopped the bleeding almost immediately.
The label says it has Iodoform, Potassium Alum, Flowers of sulfur, Tannic Acid, Activated Charcoal, Copper Sulfate and hydrated lime in it.

I used scarlet oil with good results too. Not recommended for animals for meat consumption (not sure why), but should be okay on a laying hen to treat wounds... you can find it in the horse section of your feed store or occasionally in the dog section. It's mainly an herbal pine needle oil, camphor etc, oil and fish emulsion blend if I remember correctly... been a couple years. Treats both bacterial and fungal infections and repels flies and such too.

Glad she's on the mend. We keep a bottle of Wonder Dust on hand. We had a rooster get his whole rear end chewed off. I didn't think he'd make it. I put the wonder dust on and he lived 3 more years!

Thanks ladies for the advice and reassurance! The lady at the farm store gave us some good advice and today, "Ethel" is doing much better. She's over the shock and the wound seems to be healing alright. We've applied more hydrogen peroxide but she's just as lively and hungry and thirsty as her sisters!

A dog bite is not as serious as a cat bite. Cats carry more bacteria in their mouths than dogs. Keep her warm and ask the farm store what they recommend. I hope she'll be all right.

I am so sorry to read this. ((((Ally)))) One of our chickens, Peep, literally had her back gnawed on by a huge dog. It looked horrible. We washed the area and sprayed some antibiotic ointment for fowl/chickens. She pulled through.
I would suggest that you go to your nearest farm supply store and see what they have for ointment. They may be able to suggest a product.
