I am getting some chicks this year and wondering what your favorite variety would be. I love the americaunas and the buff orphingtons. I want to get some blue chochins and some red lace wyendotes (sorry about the spelling). I would like a frizzle or two also. Have any of you had the last three. I have had americaunas and ophingtons and know them, but wonder about how friendly and hardy the others are. What is the most tame and affectionate breed? I have 9 chickens right now and want to get up to maybe 2 dozen plus a couple of peacocks.

How does a person choose. There are so many wonderful varieties. I love the colorful ones. I may end up with more roosters because they are so pretty. I wish females were as pretty.

You are most welcome :) Hopefully it will be worthwhile for you ladies :) That is how we decided to get our original ones, and we use it again after we move in a couple years! I usually look up the ones it suggests on different websites to gain more insight on their typical characteristics :)

Shannon, thanks for the test. I am sure I am going to learn quite a bit from it.

Shannon if you find the test, and whatever way works best for you, I would like a copy too. I am learning so much about chickens from all my FarmGirl Sisters.

Americans are Easter Eggers, right? If so, we have those and some black austrolorps. Love love love our chickens! Our kids can mess with them, as can we. I think part of it just depends on how much you handle them. I have heard that wyondottes are harder to keep their vents clean. Does anyone have this experience? I. Love my chickens, but do not have time to check their vents every day! When we move, we have talked about having between twenty and forty chickens. Our family can eat about eighteen eggs in one sitting, if not more, so we would like some to sell, as well!

Kem - I guess the other thing you need to look at is which ones are hardy for your specific area. I think either the Chicken Chick or Backyard Chicken has a "test" you can take, that will tell you which breeds it recommends based on your desires... For example, cold or heat hardy, broodiness, docile, color of eggs, frequency of laying, etc. I will try to find the quiz for you if you are interested!

I love all the ones you've listed. Black Australorps are gentle and sweet. To me, they look very feminine and lady like. Rhode Island and New Hampshire Reds are hardy and tough. They make me think of being a farmgirl...a total mix of farm tough and girly-ness. Reds are a bit independent. Although, I had one, named Tabasco, that was my lap chicken. Every time I'd sit down by the camp fire, she'd hop in my lap to enjoy it with me.
