So I know that chickens can't eat white potatoes due to the toxins that are bad for them. I just found out that tomatoes are also in the night shade family, and that you can actually grow a tomato on a potato plant and vice versa. Logic would say then that chickens can't eat or shouldn't eat tomatoes, either. Anyone else know about this or can weigh in? I won't feed my hens any tomatoes or pieces of tomato just in case.

Eggplant is another member of the nightshade family. Found that out on a cooking show.

My girls love tomatoes, too, so i was a bit worried. I know not to give them white potato skins, but this was the first time I'd heard the two plants are that closely related. I knew to consult my farmgirls! Thanks, farmsisters!

I agree with Catherine. We're not supposed to eat green potatoes either. My chickens love tomatoes.

I think the peels are toxic only if they've grown above ground and develop a green skin from exposure to the sun. I don't even know where I heard that, so, it may not be true either.

I don't think anything will harm chickens---food wise. They are natures scavengers for sure.

Whew! I got nervous for a second as I fed my ladies some leftover mashed potatoes yesterday.

I feed my chickens tomatoes all the time.
And I think only the potato peels are toxic. I've also fed my chickens left over cooked potatoes.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I've had no problems to note.
