Posted - Dec 15 2014 : 1:18:17 PM It may seem like an odd time for a calf, but our Longhorns don't calve at the same time as most cows or the ones on in our little herd at the same time of the year.
On DECEMBER 11th, "Freckles", a cute little heifer calf was born. Her momma is "Patty" a full-blooded Longhorn. "Freckles" didn't waste any time tackling the world and getting her tiny little hooves under her.
I haven't been able to get a closeup pic of her yet, hope to soon. I tried this morning but she got up and ran off after her momma. . . you could almost hear her calling "Momma, momma"!
These pics are of her at just a day old.

You can see some of the other Longhorns in our little herd right here and that's my hubby way in the back! On the far right is "Snowflake" who was born on Dec. 17, 2006. Right next to her is her last calf, "Duncan" who was born 5/8/14. The white one just beyond "Patty's" head is "Siobhan", who was born on 10/22/12 . . . "Snowflake" is her momma too! The reddish one on the far left (can't see his head) is "Huntly". "Snowflake is also his momma, he was born 11/17/11. "Huntly" and "Duncan" are both steers at this point and "Huntly" is next in line for the freezer!

Posted - Feb 23 2015 : 1:06:15 PM We finally got snow here in southwest Colorado, over a foot of heavy wet stuff! Up until now we haven't been throwing hay to our cows as they've been able to graze in a big pasture. Today, we hauled hay to them and it was "Freckles" first experience with the dry stuff tossed over the fence by a human being. She just stood there while the other cows started eating. Then she slowly approached some hay, gingerly took a nibble at a bit, but it didnt' take long for her to start munching on it in a more serious manner. It was kinda entertaining to watch her. CJ

Posted - Feb 23 2015 : 12:51:08 PM Thanks CeeJay. I love the pictures. They remind me of how when I was a kid I would do most anything to help with the calves rather than do dishes!

Posted - Feb 21 2015 : 12:05:36 PM We see Freckles every day when we walk out to the pasture to check on our little Longhorn cow herd. She's just a cute as she can be, growing and becoming very independent of her momma. We think our other momma Longhorn, Snowflake, will probably calve in March sometime. CJ

Posted - Dec 25 2014 : 10:13:18 AM Miss Freckles is one feisty little heifer! She runs about, with her tail up high, kicking up her heels. Two days ago we saw her teasing the youngest steer (who is only 7 months old and still a bit playful) and he ran off chasing her! Fun! CJ
