we rescued our 2 beagles Daisy and Oliver 7 years ago from a local shelter. In that time they have had their shares of health issues. We are unsure of their exact age, Daisy could be approx 12 or so, and Ollie at least 10. They are wonderful loving fun dogs, but it's getting emotionally hard.

Ollie had a cancerous growth removed from his foot about a yr or so ago. During his recent exam 2 cancerous tumors were found and we were told that it spread from the original tumor he had.

We are now saving money for a sonogram to see if this cancer has spread to the abdominal cavity, it is has, there's nothing we can do. If the cancer has not spread, my husband wants to have the 2 tumors he has removed. Ollie is currently in good spirits and acting normal. For all we know a couple of more years could pass without incident.

Daisy in the meantime has a cancerous tumor on her adrenal gland which causes her to have cushings disease. she developed geriatric bronchitis and everyday she gets an inhaler in a special dispenser made just for dogs. She cant hear too well anymore, and is developing a cataract on her left eye. Her medicine for the cushings has brought a 100% improvement. before she was falling down and weak and now runs around like a puppy. Her cancer is different from Ollie's. Because their exact ages are unknown, we just dont know how lone we will have them. we treasure every day. daisy also just went through a bout of throwing up for a couple of days which made us worried. we just never know. she seems fine now.

last night they were running around playing, it was so cute. these dogs are like kids to us.

right now i'm worried about ollie. anxiously awaiting to be able to make that sonogram appt.

I am sorry Connie. It IS very hard seeing the health of our fur babies dwindle. Love on them as much as you can and treasure them like you are.

Connie my heart goes out to you, I had to have my beloved dog put down in Feb. just enjoy them for whatever time you have left with them, they will let you know when the time has come. Just remember as much joy as they have bought to your lives, you in return have bought to theirs. Roxanna

I had a dog which died at 12 years old of cancer. She was a beagle/black lab mix and very healthy. A year before she died, friends were telling me that she looked as if she had lost weight. I didn't realize it because I saw her everyday. She started indicating that she was having pain around her abdomen. She started not eating her food. When I took her in to the vet, he said she had a large tumor in her abdomen (you could see it and feel it) and that she may only had 2 or 3 weeks to live. She weighed only 35 pounds, down from her ideal weight of 60. The ex-rays showed that it had started to spread to her lungs. I took no extraordinary measures. When she stopped eating dry food, I gave her wet food. When she stopped eating that, I gave her people food even chocolates but not too many. I was just happy to see her eat. I got a ride out to my parents place and let her walk in the woods one last time. She told me the next day that she wished to end her pain.

So, what to look for -

1) Watch their weight. Cancers use the tissues around them to survive.
2) Watch what and how much they eat. All the animals I have seen with cancer tend to lose their appetites and will starve themselves before they tell anyone that they hurt.
3) Watch their energy level. If they are still running around and happy, enjoy that. When they start getting tired and need to be carried, it is getting close to the end.

Enjoy your pets now and everyday. We intentionally adopted a 9 year old dog to give her a good life in her final years. I congratulate you and DH for rescuing dogs with health problems. They need good lives also.

Prayers are with you for peace in keeping your pets as healthy as you can and yet being able to know when it is time to help them gently ease out of pain when the time comes. Our pets become a part of us and our lives. Their life span is usually so much shorter than ours, but their love and devotion is well worth the pain of letting go.

it can come close to losing a child for many of us...I so wish our pets life spans were closer to ours, I lost my "Baby Girl" 7 yrs ago, and a peice of me died with her...

Connie - I know how you feel. Our dogs are "babies" to us too! Sending heartfelt prayers your way. Please keep us poasted.
