We have a hen that can't walk. At 1st we thought she was sick because she was off by herself, but now she cannot stand on her own. Her eyes are bright, she is eating and drinking, and her butt and poo look OK. I picked her up today and moved her legs around and it did not seem to bother her. I am worried she may have a back injury or something like that. Any ideas?
Thanks!

We are going to bring her up to the house so she will be by herself and not stand the chance of the other hens pecking her.

Ok if she has some missing feather whether from molting or being picked on she may have has some hen hit some nerves in her back & they are inflamed & causing her to have trouble with the legs...if you can heat a small towel in the dryer & lay that over her back after its cooled a it..if its too hot it will burn her & she will try to get out of it...the mild heat will help if her back nerves are having some pain plus the low heat will make her feel secure....love you are doing the non-GMO feeds 7 corn...wonderful!

Oh Michele!
How thankful and timely that you came back when you did!
YOu gave me so many suggestions!
She is a sweet hen, about 5 YO, not sure how much she is laying.
I gave her a bit of banana tonight and she pecked at that.
Her feet look OK, and we feed grit.
She is eating a non GMO feed and some non GMO corn as an occasional treat.
She has lost some fathers on her lower back, but so many of my hens are molting, I am not super concerned about that.
I just hope she doesn't have a skeletal injury.
Thanks you Michele & WELCOME BACK!!!!

this is a hard one, I know she's not egg bound cause they can still walk as will those that are gizzard bound. question if you push on her while she is sitting does she just fall over on her side? or will she try to move her legs under her to get up? how old is she? what are you feeding her? the reason I ask all this is any of these could be a problem with her...it could be marckes disease(spelled?) in which they just lose the ability to walk but usually a leg will stick straight out from under them...it can hit fast so you never know they are carrying it...it could be a big calcium deficient & the legs are usually the 1st you will notice with the problem.....has her leg color changed? if she is laying eggs are they weak shelled? if so increase the calcium each day with separate feed for her...add either a few drops of human baby liquid vits or grind up human calcium tablets & put a pinch of that in her feed once a day.....you can also give her 1/4 can of tuna in oil or water for 4-8 days. It could be also that she has strained her leg muscles jumping off of something & just needs to rest them for a few days.....check for bumblefoot (scabs on bottom of feet)..you said the poo is normal but is there any green or yellow in it? If so you may have a mild case of gizzard bound so add grit into the feed instead of just letting her get it separately...if you don't have grit add clean play sand to it......I bet if you separate her & put her in a nice comfortable place with lots of feed/water & treats she will improve.....It sounds like maybe she has been picked on & is depressed, they don't need wounds to be upset & want to be left alone...try if you can to go get her & hold her for a bit while talking to her....I will carry mine around with me & talk to them. It sounds silly but they do enjoy the attention.....oh & before I forget if you have cheerios give her a few & see if she will eat them....they love them so if she eats them you know shes still interested in food.....keep us posted on how she does please
