So before I tell about what I need help with I need to give a little background. We have a doggy door on the side of the garage. This allows the dogs to go in and out of the garage when they need to. Then we also have a little kitty door that goes from the house to the garage. Their litter and food is in the garage, so they can also come and go as they please from outside to inside. My cat Red is who we are having problems with. He is an orange male tabby. The dog actually found him when he could fit in the palm of your hand and he was knocking on deaths door. So we nursed it back to health and it was the perfect lap kitty. He would just snuggle all day/night with you. Well he then got healthy and began "terrorizing the neighborhood", lol as I call it.
This is the problem... he likes to hunt (which I'm ok with) except he likes to bring the things he catches into the house and play with them. Just today he has brought in a chipmunk (that went under the fridge and now we can't seem to find it, but we did find a dead baby mouse under it!) and a bird. He brought the bird in two times. The first time it was alive and the second time it was dead.
Here is the photo from trying to find the chipmunk...
This is not the first thing he has brought in and I know it wont be the last. Any idea on how to teach him to NOT bring it in the house?

Thanks for sharing your stories ladies! Glad to know I'm not the only one! Currently there is a babish sized bird some where in the living room with no tail feathers. I was working in my craft room and it flew at me all ninja style. it went into the living room and now we can't find it. :( I'll have to try the praise thing and see if it works. I am not counting on it, but will try anything at this point.

Then I see him doing things like this and it's cute!

My mommy is Marlee and I left her a good size rabbit right by the front door this morning so I know she will see it. She has been spoiling me lately so this is her reward.

We have a pet door that is electronic and reads our cat's chip to let him in or out. He has to get his head up in the door just right in order for the door to open. This isn't possible with something in his mouth, so we've virtually eliminated the problem of him bringing in gifts. He still brings treats to the back porch but at least we can see them and not let him in if he has a goody in his mouth. The pet door has a timer on it and you can control access for multiple cats so it is nice if you have house cats that you don't want to go outside. A collar with several bells and tags also helps cut way down on kitty's hunting success. Praise for catching treats used to work very well with my old cat, but not the one we have now! Good luck!

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

My girl Miss Kitty used to catch hummingbirds, alive, and brings them inside. When she first started this, we had just found out my hubby is allergic to wasp stings, guess what a hummingbird sounds like when you are sleeping during day while working the overnight shift. I got a butterfly net so the little guys could be caught and returned outside. This went on for about a month, then one Saturday morning I was studying at the kitchen table, and Miss Kitty brought me a stunned hummer and dropped it on my open text book. I picked it up, showed it to her and told what a wonderful kitty present it was, petted and praised her, she never brought in another. One of our boy cats used to leave dead moles and mice on the backdoor step. Same thing, I praised and petted and stopped finding kitty presents.

Erin, I will lock them all outside if that ever happens! It was bad enough the other day I was walking down the hall way, turned around and had a bird almost fly into my face! Currently he is on the table ripping up the newspaper!

SAME problem here. We have a dog door too that the cat uses. She brought in a LIVE baby O'possum one time! Boy - THAT was an adventure! I just roll with it.... until she eventually brings in a snake... dead or alive, we're gonna have a serious TALK if that ever happens.

Betty they will go after practically anything!
Sox was a little stray when he got him. He wondered into our yard, we weren't living here. But came and that has been eight years ago. He is so spoiled. And he fits are household wonderfully.

Heather, the problem is that Daryl stays inside except to go out and eat or potty. So we can't keep the hole shut all day when noone is in the house. Plus it's been getting in the 80s and humid, so I've been trying to even keep the dogs inside. They go out side and just start panting! I did however shut them all out the other day as Red brought in a bird, not once but TWICE! So I posted a FREE CAT on my facebook page. I said it even came with a free bird in a box toy! HAHAHAHAHA.
Marlee, Oh mine is a good hunter too! I've watched from the kitchen window. He was even catching the bugs that happen to come in while we brought groceries in last night. He just swatted it to play with it.
As of right now... not sure if the chippie is still in the house or not. Haven't heard any chirping and haven't smelled death yet.

I am sorry but I can't quit laughing. Our cat Sox the Man Cat had a couple of times brought a bird and my husband would open the back door he would go straight through. Since we live in the deep south, we get little lizards in the house and yep he would go after them. He liked the catch and release thing, most of the time he would go out on the carport with them. now he lay's them by the door. I told my husband he is just showing his gratitude for all we do for him. One day it was three mice. He is a good hunter.

my suggestion is close the kitty door and make red stay in or out. If you let him in you can check and make sure he doesn't have anything he isn't supposed to be bringing in.

Linda, I'm sorry to hear you have the same problems, but I'm kinda glad I'm not the only one! LOL. I take them away as soon as I find out he has them. Well when we catch whatever it is. Most of the time it results in us chasing the cat who is chasing whatever it is that he brought in. Then if the dogs are in the house, they are in the middle of the chase also. It's a 3 ring circus around here most of the time.
Tina, I'm not sure I want to try the collar just because he freaks out when you put things on him in general. He's kind alike a small lion, lol. But currently my kitchen is tore apart from looking for the chipmunk. Last report I got from my honey was that it went from under the stove to try to go out the door, but the door wasn't open so it ran back under the stove. At the moment my stove and fridge are in the middle of the kitchen floor waiting to see what happens.

get a break-away cat collar with a bell on it, the bell ringing on him will alert his prey, which then has a better chance of getting away, thus reducing his prizes being brought into the house...

OMG I have the same problem with my cat Willie. He loves to bring things in dead and alive into the house. I always take them away from him especially when they can be saved and let them go. Sometimes they are already dead and he's flinging them everywhere. After awhile he now knows I will take them away and now he is not bringing them in as much.He caught on that if you bring them in you lose them. So hopefully you can break your cat of this habit. Good luck finding the chippie.
