I am going to be raising meat chickens for the first time and I have been trying to figure out what is the best bedding to use while still being cost conscious. It is a rather large coop with a concrete floor and I am planning to clean it out once a week. I am hoping to compost what I clean out of the coops to use in next years garden as fertilizer. So, I want whatever bedding I use to be something that will break down by next summer. I was considering using saw dust which, with my husband being a woodworker, we have plenty of but, my mother told me that they might eat that and it could harm them. What are your thoughts?
I am having trouble finding online resources about raising meat chickens. It seems like everything I find caters to egg laying chickens. Do you know any good online resources or books I can buy?

What about pine bedding? I see a lot of mention on using that?

NO, on sawdust, irritates lungs and yes they may eat it which would cause impaction, I would use straw, its easy to pick up with a pitch fork/manure fork, make it at thick as you can, so they are not on the cement, if you can find rubber stall matts (for horse stalls), the cushion would help alot, make sure to use turkey start and turkey grow for them, they need the extra proteins, hard boiled eggs crumbled up with the shell is also good for them...also they will need some kind of pan/pans with dirt and some sand in it, to take their dust baths in, as soon as they start getting their pin feathers...I raise in lots of 60, 4 times a year jumbo cornish cross, they are fryer weight at about 5 weeks give or take, and roaster weight at about 7-8 weeks...
