We have had Mack for 6 yrs. We rescued him when someone drop him off at one of our local truck stops. That is where his name came from....Mack Truck...so my son-in-law came up with Mack...He is s sweet man and loves everyone. He has lived his life on 10 pastured acres and no problems. So now that we have moved to 9 acres of mostly woods...and oaks trees LOTS of them...I have had a problem with allergies too. So the other night I saw him licking his tail...made him stop several times. So when I got up the next morning for work he was not acting like himself and I saw his tail looked really bad...so I took a closer look and saw puss on most of where he had licked. I called the vet and my husband took him. They said he had hot spots, and gave him meds. I have looked up this and it said it was because either from being dirty, fleas, being ponds, and allergies...so I have to find out what ii is that is the problem. We had a pond where we lived before and he loved being in it..nothing ever happened. We keep him clean and he is on a flea regiment no the only thing that I can say it might be is that he has allergies with the oak trees..If any of you ladies have and remedies and reasons that this has happened now please let me know...I have read that apple cider vinegar and neems oil also..I know about neems oil and dont have a problem with using either of these things...

When we rescued retired racing greyhounds, they'd often come off the track with hot spots under their collars. Shave area, apply iodine. Iodine works on ringworm too.

Mack is doing much better. His hair has come back and he is not itching..he took his last pill yesterday morning, so lets see how long this will last. Iwill be doing rmredies instead of Dr now that I know what it is. Thanks Ladies for all the help.

Recently two of my daughter's cats got something similar to what you have described here. They got them right after we took them for their rabies shots. I'm wondering.....

P.S. also you can put bitter apple around the areas to prevent him from continueing to lick...

another cause of hot spots is high proteins in his food, as dogs get older their systems will not be able to break down high proteins, and it will manifest to hot spots, remove beef from his food, use instead lamb, rabbit or chicken as your meat base...also you can dab alcohol on the spots to help dry them up...

A great home remedy for hot spots is to steep regular tea bags until the tea is BLACK, very strong. Dissolve half a dozen aspirin (not baby, not tylenol, not advil)in the tea. Once it's cool, dab it on the hot spot with cotton balls several times a day. The combination of tannic acid and aspirin will both dry the spot and sooth the pain. Hot spots can occur any time the dog licks too much. The smell (sweet) is a giveaway, too. Hope this helps.
Oh, this mixture can be kept in the fridge and used all summer.
