My husband and I are wanting to raise a couple of goats. Is there anyone in or around central Indiana that has some for sale. They don't have to be registered or 'special'. We just want to have a couple for milk.
I've been checking online and some of the prices are way over our budget. We are thinking between $40 and $100. We would like Nubians or Boers.

we live close, wish we still had some to sell. We thinned our herd way back last year to be able to have a few 4-H pigs. Usually there are lots of goats & used to go cheap (last yr, we havent' been this winter) at Strawtown auction...Thursday nights are their sales. Good luck...i will keep you posted if I hear of any close by.

Yes location...our location is in most cases a huge challenge. It's not bad if youre buying but selling...ugh. Its a tradeoff for pretty scenery and sunsets..lol. Most people here do a lot of bartering and helping each other out. Hard work, no pay is the norm. The internet does help though. It's not too hard or costly to get livestock shipped.

Here in NM one can get a decent milk goat for $150. That is one reason I got out of raising them, especially in our remote area nobody wanted to pay over $35 for one and we had top quality saanens worth about $400. I ended up with too many goats.

About the only thing your going to get for $100 is a whether. If you dont want to spend much money check out the sale yards. But then you probably wont get clean animals. Clean animals from clean herds arent cheap, it takes money to raise and feed and test for clean animals, thus prices are any where from 175 to 500 in most areas..

Goat meat is SO good. If cooked right. We butchered an older Pygmy buck and it was surprisingly good. It taste a little sweet to me. This is why I went ahead and got a Boer buck to breed with my Nubian doe, who usually has bucks. And Penelope is bred to his too. I hope I get bucks this year. They will be castrated and raised for meat. The meat can be used just like any other meats. I have made stew and it's really good. As far as the kids being too cute, it doesn't bother me at all. I probably won't disbud the bucks because of this but will have to think on it. I might have to anyway because I don't have horned goats here.

nubians are way too noisy for me. boers are wonderful and also for milk la manchas have a sweet disposition. good tasting milk too.

We raise Toggenburg and Oberhaslis but we are raising just for milk.
We had Nubians but they are a lot lively ;) My oldest daughter loves them.
I live in Michigan and a lot of people raise the Lamancha and say that they are a great meat/dairy cross. I can't get pass the ears but they do great at our fairs.

Thanks - We are looking everywhere. Okay then - what other breeds are good for meat and milk. We have a buyer of the meat, but he prefers the Nubians or Boers. I am completely open to suggestions. I wished I lived closer to you too, Kristin. I would bring my trailer down and load up!

Last fall goats were a little cheaper due to high hay prices. You may have to buy an older doe or a very young doe to get in that price range.
Maybe you could find a goat dairy that is selling some of their older stock.
OR buy a doe kid.
You can check Craigslist for goats available in your area.

Don't know if you live near Linda in Ohio. But she has Nubians. Wooliespinner is her on-line name here. Have you checked Craig's list? If you find young kids, you might pay that much, especially for a Boer. Or a cross. You should be able to find some soon because goats will be starting to kid soon. Mine are. Wish you lived closer because I'll be selling all of my kids this year and I have what you're looking for. Good luck! And go to your local feed store and ask. Put up an ad too.

nubians and boers are very expensive in my area, even unregistered, I have nub/boer crosses, mostly just for meat...does in either breed are $200 up...
