One of my Toulouse geese is not eating and is loosing weight. She is 6 months old and in the last week has stopped. honking and carrying on in typical goose manner. When i picked her up last night, well i could pick her up without a fight (not usual) she only weighed about 10-12 lbs instead of the 25-30 lbs she normally weighs. any suggestions on what i could do to re-excite her appetite would be greatly appreciated . sandy |

Hi Karla,
Well, some or most that I have had will mate for life. Geese are funny creatures. Personally,in trying to replace a goose for another goose, you will be best by getting a few small goslings. That way the goose that is there will not feel so threatened by the other.
I have actually had a female goose take over my gosling hatches as tho she had sat on and hatched them herself. She care for and raised 12 goslings.
Now as for a mate, as she has never had one, she may if you bring in a few goslings choose to accept on of them for her mate.
It is very hard to keep just one of anything I have found.
Also, geese can live a VERY long time ... I had one who was about 17 years old when something took her .... she had two strokes and was blind in one eye and her balance was just about gone, but you could NOT keep her away from her flock.
As for the ducks ... well, that just sound territorial.

Hi Teri, I have some goose questions for you. In the spring I got two Africian gooslings both female, I lost one this past summer thanks to a bobcat. The one left (Gabby) was stressed and it showed so trying to be a good goosemother I went out and got the first replacement I could find. A male Chinese, not a good fit, he liked me more than Gabby. He is now gone because of him being too noisy. I am taking my time to find her another (Africian) friend. Which is best male or female, I don't care about babies, I just want a good friend/mate for her. Or does it matter? Next I have a pair of ducks and the male duck chases the goose all the time. I seperated in the pens at night because he would chase her so. Whats up with that? Karla |

Teri, thank you. I don't know why i didn't think of worming before. That's the first thing i think of when my chickens get sick. Icouldn't find any flubenvet but did still have some wazine17 so i used that n put it out for everybody. It perked up my goose and a couple of my chickens as well. Its safe to say she's feeling better as she is eatting better and she came to the door about 4am just to make crazy bird noise. :-) what a way to wake up!! Once again thank you Teri. sandy |

I have raised geese for over 16 years ... I found this that may help.
Hope so ...
Geese and ducks are often affected by a parasite called "gizzard worms". These worms are often responsible for the loss of appetite, condition and weight in birds Arthur's age. While waterfowl may carry other worms as well, gizzard worms produce exactly the signs you've described.
Flubenvet is effective against gizzard worm and you can obtain it from a veterinarian and many farm and feed supply stores. Use it according to the instructions on the package.
Of course, it must be realized that other things can cause similar signs, but if he starts eating better and regains his weight after worming you'll know you did the right thing in worming him. If not, a bird veterinarian will need to examine him to try to find the problem.

Sometimes one of my chickens will get like that. I dont know what it is. I wonder if it might be worms? I hope you girl gets better Sandy.
