Hello gals - when we first moved to our farm last December there were two pigeons living in the hayloft. They mess on everything up there - drives me nuts! Some people told us to "take care of the pigeons right away" because they carry disease. Others told us not to worry about it. Well, now I know we've got at least ten up there. My mom mentioned maybe it was time to send the boys out to get rid of them. How many pigeons are too many?

Amy,
I'm pretty sure they send out a message of some sort when they find a sweet spot! After some shooting we'll be down to one or two. Then they don't show up for a while so we let up on Pigeon Patrol. Until suddenly there are MASSES of them out side!

Ha! Laura, you make me giggle! :) My husband was wondering how fast pigeons can reproduce? He didn't know if the pigeons in our barn were having babies that fast or if they are sending out an email to all their relatives to move in...BOYS, GET YOUR GUNS!!

We have absolutely no pigeons here because the hawks gobble them up. I wonder if there are any falconers that would oblige you. I sort of doubt that would be anything that is done these days, but what do I know? lol.....I'd say keep shootin....My son got expert marksman in Marine boot camp and got to call home as a reward. He hit the bullseye at 1500 yds. 3 times in a row. It was from all the target practice he got as a kid shooting prairie dogs in our field. I say who knows how many wars were won thanks to the lowly prairie dog, or pigeon as in your case. That's what they're for.

I agree, any is too many! I have an issue with wild ones eating all my chicken food.
1)it gets expensive feeding 80+ pigeons 2) I worry about diseases being carried in too.
The little buggers, or beggars, wait for me to come out and feed in the morning and then wait for me to go back in the house! Once I'm even in the porch, out of sight of the chicken coop/feed area they swoop in and gobble down my bird's food.
I bought my boys air guns and send them out to shoot pigeons. We've even fired the shotgun a few times (we alert the neighbors first).
You're lucky in that you KNOW where your pest birds live. Mine come from who knows where!

Any pigeons are too many. It's just like starlings. When they start pooping on food that your animals eat, they can start making your animals sick.
