In the past few weeks, our hens have been dying one by one. We're not sure what 's going on. their backsides are red and swollen and some of the eggs have had blood on the shell.
Any idea what could be causing this and what we can do to keep the rest from dying? |

Do you have a rooster?
DE is Diatomaceous Earth- you need food-grade for your birds. Different people have different reports on if DE works well internally. Externally, it's great, but I have my doubts on its efficacy internally, once moist.
I second Kathryn. Isolate those who look/act "off" and observe for any other signs/symptoms.

we've lost one more since I last posted :(
I have been trying to get in touch with the county 4H /extension poultry leader for advice but no luck so far.
My friend suggested putting garlic bulbs in the water to deworm.
If I bought something, where would I get it and what is it called?
What is DE?
We have had hens for over 10 years and have never had this problem! |

Do you need to worm them? when was the last time you did? have you checked for lice? Dust them with DE, wear a msck or handkerchief to protect yourself, also put DE in all of their favorite dust baths. Are they picking each other's rear ends? You will need to observe and isolate the culprits, anti-pick lotion might help.Blood on the shells is from the egg passing through the effected area, it washes off and the egg is fine to use.

I have no idea, but try to google those symptoms. I hope it is something that you are able to stop. I'm sorrry about your hens.
