I bought a lovely Bourbon hen at a livestock auction on Saturday. She looked fine in the little cage she was laying down in so I didn't notice anything wrong until I brought her home. The poor girl can't stand up, has trouble controlling her head, and seems to have lost all sense of balance. No sign that she's in pain though. It's like her equilibrium is off.
I've been spoon feeding her chicken mash mixed with water, and she's been swallowing it fine, along with a squirt of electrolyte paste. Today (Tuesday) she pooped for the first time since I got her on Saturday. It was runny and very nasty smelling (but I took it as a good sign that she went, at least).
My first thought was Marek's disease. Any thoughts? Is there anything I can do for her other than what I'm already doing? She seems to be getting better a very little bit, or I'm getting attached to her and am blind to her being sick. I'd hate to have to put her down having just got her, but I'm not sure what to do...

I have a turkey farm, and it sounds to me that it got a chill... you have to dip their buts in warm water and dry twice a day to keep from getting "pasted up" ...How is it doing now?

I had to put my tom down, sorta same thing, other than he finally set down, and looked like he was having a seizure, I noticed about 10 days before that, and I removed him from everybody, and put him where they could not get to him. I even called the vet, and he just plainly told me, its not worth infecting everything else, and to weight the odds, how bad did I want to deal with this. Great help. But I decided, to put him down, cause, I have chickens, geese, and ducks. Please follow Tinas advice and make sure to wash everything your hands, boots, and all feeders, scoops, waterers, that come in contact with her. Also, note, that I do not run my chickens with my turkeys, You can google and read about turkeys, and their diseases. You did not say anythng about other animals, but just be careful. Good luck---P.s. It was hard to put him down, had him as a baby, and he use to chase cars, and my 4 wheeler, we all loved him. Farmgirl #946 Linda |

I don't know anything about turkeys, but I do know one thing about auctions ...Never be too proud of what you big are an auction. You paid more than what everyone thought it was worth./

first off keep her away from all of your other poultry, wash your hands and boots off before going into any of your other poutry pens with a bleach solution...it could be so many differant things, as well as a stroke...google turkey diseases, and compare symtoms and pictures...good luck
