My husband found a little kitten today up in the mountains, where his work had sent him. He was in the middle of nowhere on a gravel road and there was this beautiful long-haired, blue-eyed Siamese kitten. He called and asked what he should do. There were no houses around and the kitty was following him everywhere. It was very dirty. He cleaned it up, put it in the truck, made a stop at Chick-Fil-A,gave the kitty chicken and water, then brought it home. It was precious. I saw it had fleas, so ended up taking it to PetSmart for a checkup. My eleven-year-old neighbor came with me. If the kitten turned out to be a boy her parents would let her keep it. She named it Sawyer. He was six weeks old. They took the kitten away for tests, came back and said it had an upper rep. infection and that we would have to give it a spot-on for the fleas. Then, the vet came in again and said the kitten had feline leukemia and was very sick, would have problems for the rest of its short life, etc. Plus, it was highly contagious to other cats. So, they advised me to have him put to sleep. PetSmart wouldn't budge about helping with the bill. We'd only had the kitten a couple of hours. It was so hard, especially since I'm going through some health issues with my dog (high blood pressure, bleeding of the eye that has caused blindness in one eye, and so forth). My dog's bills have been enormous. Today's PetSmart bill was a little over $100. We brought Sawyer back home and gave him a proper burial, complete with rocks and flowers on the grave. My neighbor will make a cross for the grave, which located is among the pines between our homes. This has been a very sad day. Can't understand how someone could just dump off a kitten in the middle of nowhere because it was sick and they didn't want to be bothered.

Thanks for the sweet posts. I spoke with someone today who adopted a Siamese kitten from the local animal shelter, had it for a few weeks and fell in love with it. Then, it started getting sick. She spent lots of $$ on it, and the vet was having a hard time trying to figure out what was wrong. She said she'd have to take an x-ray. When she turned the kitten over on its back to do the x-ray she discovered that it's belly was covered with bruises. That's what made her test for feline leukemia and it turned out positive. Even though it had tested negative at the animal shelter, the vet said it could have been a false negative.

Oh, such a sad thing to happen. I am so sorry that you had to go through that. You and your husband are great people for doing what you did. I am sure your neighbor is heartbroken. Big hugs to all of you.

I doubt the people that had it had enough sense to ever take it to the vet. There is probably a house up there somewhere that lets cats breed indiscriminately. They probably are all inbred and full of germs. Kudos to you Karen for helping the little thing even though you got a bill you should be proud of yourself, I am!

Thanks to all of you sweet farm sisters for your kind words of understanding and encouragement. After a good cry last night, I started feeling better. My little neighbor Gracie is dealing with Sawyer's passing better than I thought she would. When I told her that I was going to place some rocks on the grave she said, "Well, that is appropriate because 'the stone was rolled away.'" I'd told her that Sawyer was with God and that we shouldn't worry so much over his little body (his eyes were open and that disturbed her greatly). She made a vow to place flowers on the grave and, knowing her, she will especially since it is in a pine grove close to her house.
Lorraine, thank you for praying for my dog. I take her to the opthamologist tomorrow for a recheck. This is always an ordeal as she shakes all the way to the vet specialist hospital. I'm afraid that her blood pressure will soar and she'll have a heart attack. This is the main reason our regular holistic vet makes house calls. What I do for my fur babies! I wish I weren't so tender hearted towards animals, but, after reading all the posts on Barnyard Buddies, I know that I am not alone.

Karen, I am so sorry about Sawyer. Your heart must be breaking. But I rejoice that he found you, if only for a day. He came upon pure love. I feel with you about the vet bills, but God doesn't let a kindness go unnoticed. Let's pray your needs will be met. I took in two cats who have the leukemia virus, but I don't have any other cats, only 4 dogs. So far so good. |

Karen, what a wonderful husband you have for picking up the kitty and bringing it home. How sad it didn't make it. I'm with you on the HOW can anyone drop off an animal. I just cannot wrap my brains around that! I get so angry just to think of it. You've done a wonderful thing. I say this all the time, but here I go again, I wish I were the animal police. How is your little neighbor dealing with it all? I'll say a prayer for the little kitten.

I am so sorry you had to endure all that. At least the little kitty didn't die out there by itself. At least it felt loved even if it was a short while.You did your best for him .Hugs.

Sorry the little kitty was sick. Bless your heart for taking care of him and not letting him suffer. My aunt had the same exact thing happen to her. Both stories are very sad, but I'm glad the kitties didn't have to suffer out in the elements alone.

if the kitten had feline leukemia, so did its siblings and mother, so they were probally all dumped and that poor baby was the only one still alive when your husband found him, very, very sad since there is a vaccine for this disease, and all this heartache could have been prevented...humans can be the cruelest animals on the planet...
