Last month I bought my 16% all grain for my dairy goats. It was $12.25. When I went today to get more, it was $14.25. And they said by next week grain prices will go up 30-40% more. Good grief! What are we going to do? It's because of corn. And I don't care to have that corn in any of my feed anyway. SO I am thinking about asking around if anyone wants to go buy bulk grains at a mill and splitting the cost.
What are prices like where y'all live right now?

Cracked corn has gone up almost $3.00 a bag in less than a week around here! |

Our feed prices are going up fast also. I was shocked at the last load of goat feed.The chicken feed went up over 2 dollars a bag. The goat feed was up over 30 dollars for the batch. It lasted me around 8 weeks....I dread what the next load is going to be.
One thing about canning your garden produce or canning produce you buy at the farmers market is that the price you paid will hold in your pantry all winter long!!! I could not grow many things here but I have purchased produce from other farmers and canned it all up.Tomorrow I am going to can 25 lbs of carrots that I bought that are organic. I paid $16.75 for them. I can't wait to see how they turn out.

It's terrible,I miss my goats and rabbits terribly but am kind of relieved not to have them right now because my Husband is going back to school in prep for police academy in January and we have the baby coming so it's not so easy anymore to absorb the growing feed prices and it's only going to get worse!
The Calhan Co-op has just closed too so buying in bulk takes some traveling but lately all I'm buying is senior feed,oats and scratch grain along with hay but it's still costing us a bundle.
I'm with you on the soy Kris,I avoid it too.

I don't know why they put corn in chicken feed. They don't need it in the summer months, like Michele said. And they don't really like it. I might just nuy wheat and oats and mix it for now. I'd really rather not feed my animals corn at all. But it's in everything!And soybeans. I try not to eat soy so I sure don't want my animals to eat it. I drink their milk and eat the eggs and meat so it's in there. I am feeding the sheep their sheep pellets mixed with a little alfalfa pellets and sunflower seeds right now. I might add corn in the winter. I don't know. They seem to be doing fine without it.
I just got another milk customer yesterday. BEFORE I went to the feed store. I really need to go up at least $1 per gallon now. I've already gone up tp $3 a dozen for eggs.

Gotta love futures and the market!
When I had chickens, I fed them a cracked corn. I mix the shelled corn in with my sheep grain in the winter months. I'm hopinf that my pastures will stay as good as last year. My sheep ate off of the grass until Jan. it was a good year. *fingers crossed*

Corn and soybean prices are causing the increase.
As soon as the futures start going up, our local prices increase.
My feed grind,the first part of the year, cost 59 dollars. The same mix, this week was just over 80 dollars.

Roxanna....I give my chickens both whole corn & cracked....but I only give whole corn as a early morning scratch in the winter as it takes a long time to get thur their system .....its harder for them to break down so it keeps them warmer in the winter whereas in the summer/warmer months I don't want them that warm......corn really has no value to a chicken as its just pure sugar for them...so its mainly a energy food for them when the weather is very cold....think of it as a filler not as a real food for a chicken...with 4 legged animals that sugar is turned to fat & can be a benefit to the animal but in chickens you really don't want to fatten a chicken up.....fat on a chicken goes to waste when butchered & if not butchered does give insulation during the winter but you really want most of that fat gone when the hot months come around......Also whole corn can cause more crop & gizzard bounds...which we know can kill them so its best to go the cracked corn over all...but giving whole corn early in the mornings while they still have a whole day out eating dirt & small stones helps cut it up for them before it gets to the gizzard & pooped....Michele'

Yep, I just paid 2.00 more per fifty pounds of corn!
The girls may not get so much of their crack this winter. Not at those prices. I'm still lokking for hay!
