Posted - Jul 24 2012 : 1:23:45 PM I have 2 wethers in my care who are pets. I understand they should not have grain due to a problem with urinary calculi. What do others feed their sheep? Just good hay and pasture? What about vitamin supplements? I know they cannot have anything with copper in it. Would appreciate any help offered! |

Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 3:31:28 PM You should keep loose salt by your waterer. I feed my sheep some grain every day along with pasture or hay. In the summer I mainly give the grain to get the sheep to come into the barn lot due to coyote problems. You are correct in not feeding feeds with copper in it to sheep. On the Pipestone Vet site, you can find a newsletter every month and you can also veiw past newsletters. The vet covers supplements that you should or shouldn't feed. Hope this helps. I had a blog a couple of weeks ago about a sick ewe and I put the internet site for Pipestone in that blog. I will try to post it for you.

Posted - Jul 26 2012 : 3:15:48 PM I use to have sheep and I purchased a sheep mineral that is a loose mineral and my girls wool was very shiny and beautiful. They really loved it. You can feed them a little bit of grain and it shouldn't hurt. Are these a meat breed or a wool breed? You can also give them a powder mixed in their grain or mineral to prevent the urinary calculi. I can't remember what this stuff is called. If I remember I will come back on and post it.
