Hey Chicken Mamas,
Yesterday one of our chickens starting screeching, and my son went to check on her. "MAMA!!!! Snowball is HURt! Hurry!"...I had flashes of the dog flinging the chicken, rats, etc...When I got out to the coop, there was blood everywhere (that is why my son panicked), and all over the chicken.
I picked her up, took a deep breath, put her in my lap to calm her down, and began inspecting.
Whew.
Turns out that she ripped off her whole nail somehow, just the quick is left, and it was bleeding like hell. She must have tried to scratch herself, and got blood all over her head and chest. She was a mess!
I cleaned her foot, put peroxide on it, and tried to stop the bleeding with cornstarch. That did not last, so I went to the pet store and got some of the "blood stop powder". That did it.
She seems fine today. I checked & cleaned it once more. She keeps it up when she stands, but walks on it.
Anything else I need to do, watch for?
Heike (who only has two chickens :)...and they LOVE each other as much as my son loves them....spoiled hens)

good to hear she is doing so good..yeah she will probably lift the leg for a bit while standing to ease any pain she might still be having.....Michele'

Hi Michele,
thanks for checking :). She's doing good. I am still cleaning it once a day. She will lift her leg when when she stands, but she walks on it normal.

Nope you did the right things for her, just try & wash it daily since they tend to walk thur their poo & just before heading to the roost for the night dab a bit of antibiotic ointment on it........yeap cornstarch won't work sadly...but sometime white pepper will or light a wooden match, blow it out, rake off the ash & dip the small bleeding toe in that...old farmers trick...I have done it but with hot weather their blood thins so they tend to bleed a lot more...I too have the stop blood powder & that takes a lot when there is a lot of blood......next time or if she re-opens the wound, flip her upside down so feet face ceiling this will shot the blood towards the body, slow down the bleeding so you can tend to it quickly..........don't leave them upside down too long especially if they have a full crop...lol....Michele'

Not sure.
They roam the yard for a few hours each day. It looks like she did it outside and then tried to go on her roost.
