I need advice on keeping snakes out of chicken pen. We have a swamp behind our house and this year has been really bad for snakes I am having anywhere between 2-3 snakes a week. We have dogs and even put a donkey near the pen with no success, I am so upset because they r getting more eggs than we are. I work a full time job so I can't go up there 3 or 4 times a day like I need to. Any ideas ?

our guineas take out snakes, mice, and rats... our problem is the coons take out the guineas.

I have got golf balls in there. Thanks for the guinea info . I will take into consideration all the comments and may try them all until I find what works.

Don't know from experience, yet, but I have read that Guinea Fowl will kill a snake if a flock of them comes upon one. I have 6 Guinea keets now, hoping they will be my bug patrol in my garden next spring.

Also, if you put golf balls in your nesting boxes, the snakes will eat them and leave thinking they are eggs. At first you will lose a few eggs but once the chickens get their scent on the balls, the snakes are too dumb to know the difference and will slither off with a belly full of golf balls instead of eggs. I received that advice from a feed store owner. It has worked for me so far.

Thank you Linda, I would love geese but I think the dogs would eat them:( wonder if they could protect themselves ? I have known geese to be aggressive.

GEESE!!! they will keep the snakes away. I have 2 and I have not seen any snakes this year. We have problems with copperheads also, and we have not seen any, since, the geese free range. I went to the barn the other evening, and could see where a snake had called across the road. But we have not seen it. It is big enough to be a chicken snake, but so far (knock on wood) we have seen no evidence of it. I have 4 mama hens right now with 2 to 9 little ones, and they are all being safe. Getting about 24 eggs a day, not missing any. Good luck, hope you find something that works for you. Farmgirl #946 Linda

I came across this on backyard chickens... Snakes HATE garlic. Liquid Fence Snake Repellent is the BEST thing I have found, it covers a lot of area and is safe for every persona and animal exposed. Snakes smell that garlic smell and slither the opposite way as fast as they can! I use it around my house, as I have bunnies that run free and free ranging chickens, and the terrible snake problem I use to have has ended. When I first moved in this place was snake city!

we found that we had a hole in our wood floor that was allow them to come in. All the bedding, shavings and such covers up stuff you can't see. Snakes don't need a very big hole.

I'm also concerned about them. My daughter found several chicks dead and 2 missing from a small cage in her henhouse. We think it may have been a rattler cause they will strike and then come back and eat later what they can't eat right away. Also 1 hen was walking around acting really goofy like maybe she got sort of nipped but lived. Like maybe she tried to protect them...blah creepy! Maybe put screen wire around the bottom 3 ft or so?
