This morning I went out to open up the barn and the chicken that I was 110% sure was a hen (my favorite, too) was CROWING. I'm not new at chickens and I'm pretty good at being able to tell who is who, but this chicken either a) is a cross dresser or b) is a crowing hen. I've heard that (very occasionally) a hen will take to crowing. Has anyone ever heard this happen? Perhaps I will try to get a picture of him/her so y'all can see what you think...

Sometimes easter egger chickens look like hens for a long time but then start to look like roosters. But I have had a hen that crowed before. She was a very mature game hen. Like one of the ladies said here sometimes they will especially if there is no rooster present. Hey somebody has to..LOL

Wattles are tiny
Have learned after working in the animal field to eons,,,1. never say never 2. animals will make a liar out of you every time |

Have had it happen
They will sometimes do this if no rooster is present
My girl also had killer spurs....but was a lady through and through because she laid the best eggs |

The chicken who crowed is the whiter one sitting down. I was sure it was a hen...what do you think? 3 months old, same as the one standing behind it...

once in awhile you will find a chicken (as well as other animals and humans) that have both female and male parts, and depending on which sex is stronger, it will determine how they act...the only way to tell for sure with most animals is a nercropsy, or an ultrasound at the vets, it is for lack of a better term, a freak of nature...
