We adopted a new puppy last week- she has been really great- very sweet and seemed to be a perfect match for our house. We sent her with the rescue to be spayed today and she had a bad reaction with the anesthesia. She went into cardiac arrest but they revived her but she was in a perpetual seizure mode. The vet advised waiting to see how she is in the morning, but the odds are terrible. We most likely have lost our sweet baby. I am so sad.

Well, the vet called and I asked him to put Ember down. She was laying in her kennel with her head hyper extended towards her spine and crying in pain. Even if we had gotten the symptoms under control, she would most likely have neurological damage and pain the rest of her life. That just wasn't fair to her, so she will be going up to meet Sky-Dog in Heaven soon.

Hi Alee,

Just got back from the Kalispell area. Sorry to hear this terrible news about your puppy. I remember Sky very well and Ember is now in good hands with Sky.

Love and hugs to all.

I'm sorry for your loss. Sadly, collie type dogs are more sensitive to anesthesia. She also may have had an underlying problem that caused the reaction. I know this doesn't bring her back or anything, but it may help you with closure. I'm glad you have a sister to her.

Thanks everyone- your love and support means the world to me. I am so glad that I have the farmgirls in my life! The new puppy- Serephina is doing pretty good. She is worming her way into the family and our hearts with that sweet puppy breath and the little yips and whines that only young puppies have.

Oh, Alee, I am so sorry for your heartache. You made the right decisions all the way around and I hope you can take comfort in that knowledge.
Everyone will have a new fresh start with Ember's sis. By the way, what is her name?

I did go back to the rescue yesterday and looked at Ember's sisters again. A little black one came over and climbed in my lap and refused to leave for about 10 minutes. All the other puppies came and went but she stayed just quietly laying and playing in my lap. She seems a bit more reserved than Ember was, but that could be because she is still a bit shook up from the surgery. I brought her home and she has been following us around already.

She has a horrible chewing habit that we are going to have to train out of her, but overall I think she will be a good dog.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and prayers. Truly Ember was a sweet puppy. She was a good girl and we really loved her. She had a good five days with us, and our other dog Stormy is definitly looking for her friend. I am going to go take a second look at her siblings and see if one of them speaks to my heart.

Alee, I am so sorry to read this. You've gone thru too much already and now this? I think you did the right thing for this sweet girl but the right thing still hurts. I'm remembering my Hobbs today on the 8th month anniversary of his passing so I'll join you in your grief again.

Alee, my heart breaks for you. It is so hard to lose a friend so sweet. My prayers are with you right now as you deal with the loss of your sweet baby. You can be comforted knowing she is no longer in pain. It is a hard decision to make, but know that you did the right thing for her. ((hugs))

Oh how sad. It never is easy. Although I must say in my later years I have learned that there are worse things than death. I would have made the same decision you did. You have so much going on Alee! You sure live to the fullest, but I would have to take some time out and regroup after this incident. Best to you on your family.

Alee I am so so sorry to here about your dog. I went through that with a kitten we rescued and then took to have spayed. We lost her the same way. My heart has never really healed from that. I am praying for you both. Hugs.

Thanks ladies- It was a shock, but at the same time I am really glad we had our time with little Ember. I certainly got lots of pictures with her. I think I will pick one of the best of Sky and Ember and get them framed.

I am so sorry, such a sad story, your doing the right thing by getting her spayed, and then this happens, some things I guess we just aren't suppose to understand.
Alee Posted - Jul 03 2012 : 07:26:16 AM
We don't know exactly why she had this reaction- as in many cases we are hearing two different stories. One side is that the surgery went well, she was in recovery and had cardiac arrest and they revived her and the she went into this state. The other story is that the surgey went badly, there was a malfunction in the anesthesia machine, she coded and was revived after some time and now is in this state. I don't think we will ever know. I am hoping the first story is the truth.

Keep your spirits up - she will try to recover so she can come home to you. Puppies are so resilient. I will be thinking of you. My girls, Ginger and Rosie, will too. (they are goldens)
