DH is leaving to work in North Dakota until this fall. We've tossed around different scenarios about me coming along also but my chicks are only 10 weeks old. Has anyone moved their chickens? He's only going to be gone until mid October so if I did move them, then I'd have to move them back. I can't imagine anyone wanting to come over once or twice a day for 4 months to take care of the chickens so I guess my other option would be to get rid of them (and that's another problem, who would I give them to?). I only have 4 but I've wanted them for so long and I finally got to get them this spring (before I knew DH was going to have to leave).

Any thoughts?

Thank you so much Michele! I really am tired of DH going off and leaving me behind and his set up up in ND would easily accomodate me, the dog and the chicks. We'll still have to discuss this but at least now I have a respected opinion whether the chicks could come with us. The dog is no problem, he goes where I go. My main concern were the chicks and the numerous house plants. Other than that there's nothing holding me here! It's so good to know they could easily make the trip! I am so glad you are on the boards here and are willing to share your vast expertise!

Dear hen with only 4 you can move them easily & safely....if you have a cat/dog carrier set it u0p with either towels or puppy pee pads so they have an area to poo that you can clean or toss out the used pee pads.....put in a good size shoe box for them with some other towels to lay/sleep in.......use old cottage cheese container type things that you can wire to the door for feed & water...I would fill the water only 1/2 way up so they get water but don't have it flying every where when you have to stop fast....put the carrier in the center of the back seat & seat belt it in for them....every 2 hours or so stop...check on them & add more water & feed for them....change towels or turn them over or folded if really dirty.........since they are so young I bet once they get in there they will bunch up & go to sleep for more of the trip....I would carry a gallon jug of cool but not ice cold water to refill the water for them.....crack the back windows just a bit so they get some fresh air but not so much they are getting a wind storm thur the carrier......if you are running the air conditioner make sure its not hitting them directly & don't have the windows cracked......if you think its too cold for them just set a towel over the carrier with a bit uncovered for air flow.....I promise they will do fine & you can have your babies with you.......to help you might want to wet the feed a bit so it isn't sent all over the carrier & they can fill up on feed easier........plus get bits of extra water......good luck with your move & enjoy your new area....:)...Michele'
