whose got rabbits? i usually have at least a few but i am down to use one and we bred her last week so maybe in a month we'll have bunnies. their manure is the best for quick composting as its not HOT.

If there's not much to see, it's most likely a female. The males will pop out and show off :)

My English Lop X just had 11 babies yesterday. Dad's a Satin.

My Velveteen Lop is due in a week, and these are all meat babies. Though I may retain a doe or two to start a community pen.

That seems easy enough. I will have to wait to see if n when I get babies. Another two weeks!! Thanks for easy way to check.

You have to press gently to the left and right of the private area, if something pops out, it's a male :) I don't remember how old our kits were when we 1st sexed them.

Everyone should post photos of their bunnies n rabbits. I'd love to see them. I've had Netherlands dwarfs and mini Rex I think my female is a California but I am not sure. I got her from the local feed lot and they have a local sale once a month during the summer where anyone can come with goods to barter. The kids I got her from we're not sure but I am all done with 4h so it didn't matter. I only have them for manure. It's not hot so it's the best to use unless you have access to a lot of aged My neighbor decided to Get one , ne another to breed for meat so inbred mine to her male so she could have the babies for meat. I might keep one male to keep breeding for her female. We're going to make sure we don't breed e babies to the same mom. She just had babies ltwo weeks ago so I can get one of the males from her batch to breed with my female. It's so hard to figure out whichnare males and which are females when they are young. Seems to be a guessing game. Ivenlooked it up in books but u still have to wait until they are a few months old to tell. If anyone has a sure fire way to tell the sexes distinctly please post. The babies are so cute and sweet. I have photos of older litters I will post when I am home. I am out of town this week and my dad funny enough has a bunny LuLu who visits his lanai ever morning.

So nice to hear that people have friends and food. Hubby and I just decided to get some rabbits for ourselves to raise for food on our suburban lot. The kids are really excited.

my daughter raised dutch for 4-H when she was young, then she went on to New Zealand's for the meatpen trios at the fair, I myself raise Californian/New Zealand crosses for meat, they have the best from both breeds (from very selective breeding), not nervous, great momma's , very easy keepers, and their pelts are nice...

yeah, that manure is good stuff -- we also add it directly into the garden soil!

We have a few rabbits. Over the years we've had a few litters to sell. Our rabbits are pets, but we eat wild ones time to time. I've been thinking about getting a few New Zealands to raise for meat.
I mix the manure right into the garden soil in the Spring. It's great stuff!

my 10-yr old son has meat rabbits -- they're a great project for a kid :) He uses them for 4H proj animal and also has sold a few and the rest are for dinner. He does a great job of separating emotions and remembering that the babies are meat but the moms and dad are his buddies. He is so responsible with them (usually!) and it has made the whole subject of mating/breeding/nursing not a big deal thing to him, which is nice also at this age. He does get some odd attitudes from people occasionally about them being meat animals (I agree bunnies are sooooooo cute :/ ) but most of those same people are not vegetarians and he handles the comments pretty respectfully, which is a good lesson in itself!

i have 3 litters of day old bunnies, and 3 more on the way. i have 4 Flemish Giant does and a buck, also have a trio of really nice rex. I am looking for a nice netherlands dwarf doe for my buck i just got. Love my rabbits to death. I can grow my rabbits and know what they eat. We will butcher some out of the litters that are here, some will go on to be show rabbits, a few as pets and 4h animals.

We inherited a bunny via craigslist from an anti-dump add I posted in pets. She was found in a nice lady's roses the day after easter and they never found her owners so we took her.
We think she's a Californian (or maybe a Himalayan? depends how quickly californians grow I think.) She's the sweetest baby. Doesn't chew anything but veggies (I give her sticks to chew just in case... not interested!) and licks fingers when she thinks she's getting a treat--making sure she only bites food not fingers.
Not sure I wanted a rabbit but Rosie is such a sweet girl she hopped her way into our hearts.

I don't have a hutch (and I'm afraid of keeping a rabbit outdoors in the Arizona heat) so she is a house rabbit for now with a pet taxi for a "den". We let her out for exercise, and sometimes we put her in the chicken tractor on nice days.

Do you breed them for friends or for dinner?
