We just got our bees a couple Weeks ago. Everything is going great, however, we have noticed these huge black ants all over the hive trying to get to the sugar water! We don't know how to get rid of them without harming the bees. I'm googling now, but was hoping any of you gals would have some helpful advice! I hope this is the right forum to post about bees! :) Thanks! ! !

I have read about this. If your hive is up on a stand with legs, you can put the stand legs in cans of used oil. The book says you can use tuna cans, so it does not have to be big. You do have to replenish the oil after rains. Also the bee keeping for dummies says to sprinkle cinnamon liberally on the ground around the hive. sprinkle some on the inner cover too. Reapply after rain. Things that are worth a try.
