So, my daughter and I went to visit my family in Texas for Spring Break. We were gone a week. My DH is 6'3,not scared of much, but creeped out by creepy crawlies - including my DD's pet hermit crabs. He was most worried about taking care of all the pets. So, we wrote out instructions, and DD begged him to take care of her babies.

Things went well. Only one incident when CT got a heat wave one day. I told DH not to turn on the heater to the crabs. He said, "I didn't - just the daylight". That is the heater! So he turned around in New York state and drove back to CT so he didn't cook "Shellina Gomez", "Shelton", "Shelly" and "Mia".

He was so happy when we returned but whenever DD asked on the way home from New Jersey about her crabs, he was a bit sheepish. Then he finally told us that he was freaked out, as one was running around naked - without a shell! He was so scared he did something wrong.

Turns out, our little dear 'Shellina Gomez' molted!! (Meaning, she grew out of her exoskeleton. It's a different process than switching shells. They shed their skin, and it takes time for them to harden up again). When we got home, she was back in her shell, but pink as a rose! If you have not had experience with hermits, this is not a frequent occurance, maybe only once a year if that, and had never happened to us before. DH was so relieved to hear that it was not something he did - like make them so hot they dropped their shells!

This weekend, we cleaned their crate and gave them some new shells. All evening, they were all switching shells - trying this one on, and going to that one. It was like watching a hermit crab fashion show!

Funny story Nicole. I could visualize the whole scene- your DH freaking out that he did something wrong, and the fashion show that ensued. LOL
Hope you had a nice time in Texas, visiting with family!

Oh gosh I bet he was SO relieved to find out it wasn't anything he'd done. He would have had wife AND daughter furious with him! :-O

I didn't realize that hermit crabs would molt and switch shells like that. It has to be hilarious to watch!
