Hello Ladies,
I was wondering how large can a Jersey bull/heifer get? we are thinking about getting a heifer with a calf. keep the heifer and raise the calf for meat. I was told to do this with for my first experience with cows. I was also told that jersey meat was very tender. And they are easy to deal with. But we are going to have to split the meat with a neighbor because they are helping with the cost of purchasing and raising them.

I used to have jersey dreams until I got my Irish jersey (dexter/jersey cross), Missy. She's my little pocket cow. Comes up to my hip, is a light eater (1 flake a day alfalfa or less)and is an easy keeping precious sweety. SO smart. I broke her to lead in 5 minutes. and she lets me do anything I like to her udders. She should be due to calf around thanksgiving.

rhe pic above is hippo who is flowers mama and her brother from the year before. we ate mom. she was WAY to pushy. she knew how big she was. then dinner was just that. so freckles will now carry on the line. she is getting fat now. i have 3 heifers and one cow due in november. we have one jersey due june 16. then i will breed the 2 jerseys above. they are still open. i did not need more winter babies. i get almost 3 gallons from penelope. she is a rescue. she had staph and strep in her udder. i thought she would never get well. right when i gave up she got well. lots of meds and tears etc. 9 months later she is doing great isabelle above is a 2 teat cow. she was destined to be burger. you can see she makes great babies and 3 gallons a day. we have a knock kneed cow too. she is pregnant and happy. we just got her feet done. she is so happy. we got her for $100.00. she was destined for burger. we love our girls.

 this is freckles. she is a cross cow. she has dutch belted and white park and dexter. she is now pregnant by our jersey/dexter cross bull. this will be her first calf. when we are done with this bull we will eat him. we keep them for a short time to get the job done.

 .JPG) well i hope this worked. i am not good at this yet. the first pic is flower. she is half jersey half british white park. she is a sweet girl. the 2 cows are my milkers right now. one is flowers mama. by crossing them i get beef and or milk. small animals easy to move and work with. i get jersey milk but i am not swimming in it. i also breed for A-2 A-2 gene in milk.

They are easy going, can produce alot of milk, calves will grow slower,but they dont get the same hormones as market meat cow or the shots.... I have a highlander and the best highlander beef comes form a steer around 2-3 yr old just coming off of grass pastures, so taking into consideration that every cow has a differnt time to be butchered... Dad raises bucket calves, he like jerseys for the family, but at auction they dont sell like the holstiens because of the meat color.

My dad a cattle rancher used to have a Jersey cow in his herd. She gave a lot of milk but had short teats and he milked a different cow, anyway every year when she calved he would go down and buy a calf from the dairy and put a second calf on her. He would have to work with her for about a week to take it but after that she would raise it with her own thus getting twice the profit in November at selling time. He mainly raised Santa Guertrudes so the calves she had were half beef cattle. Jerseys are cute but the bulls are more aggressive than beef cattle bulls in general. I love Jerseys big pretty eyes. Myself being pretty much of a mind that vegetarianism is the best way I always figured if I were to raise Jerseys I would register and sell the bulls for breeding stock.

we just butchered an 18 month steer. he is delicious very tender meat with lots of yellow fat from the carotene. jersey bulls are not a good thing. the steers are easy to handle. congrats. on your new adventure. i love our jersey girls. i cross mine with dexter/white park. hope this helps. happy days to you sherrye

well our jersey cow is only about 800-900lbs and we have a steer from last year his birthday is tomorrow and he is only about 200-300 lbs if you have room I agree that is the way to go BUT that being said jersey calves 1. take much longer to grow out (grass fed) and 2. dont get as big as beef cows.
This year we bred both our jersey moms to angus bulls for a bit thicker conformation on the calves for meat. This is called a "finisher"
