One of our barred rocks laid this egg today. They all lay nice sized eggs, but not truly what I would classify as "grocery store jumbo". So, this one came as quite a surprise...it was so big, I couldn't close the lid on the egg carton.

Oh, that poor hen! I agree it would make a great decorated shell.

Our girls get treats twice a day! In the morning they get special grains, and in the afternoon when I get home from work I give them what we jokingly call "chicken salad"...which is some kind of greens/veggies/fruit combination. I guess one of our girls decided to treat us!! I really hope they don't do that too often...it doesn't seem like it would be very healthy. But it is neat for a once in a great while surprise!

Holy moly! Did you give that hen a treat? I had to get out a tape measure and see how big our biggest egg was - we have a Red who always lays big eggs, but hers is only 2 1/4 inches. Your hen laid a 3 inch egg. Way to go, baby!

WOW! Kudos to your hen! She deserves a treat! :) I like Judy's idea best - what a GREAT Easter egg that would be! - Nini

We haven't cracked it open yet. Now I'm wondering what really is inside!! We will have to wait until just the right occasion.

Imagine...I was just (erroneously) worrying about them going into a molt not more than a week ago, and now they are laying dinosaur eggs!!

When I was young, I read a book called "The Enormous Egg". It hatched out a triceratops. Maybe there's a T-Rex in that egg? :)

Owey! That is huge. I have gotten a few like that. And they are mostly doubles. I always wonder how bad that hurts them.

It's probably a double, or possibly even an egg within an egg. It's not usual, but it can happen.
