We had a hen die a couple days ago (not sure why) but I was in the coop when she suddenly passed. A couple minutes before that the hen was all poofed up and making weird noises (almost like broody, but not), and the rooster was trying to jump on her head and seemed to be really mean to her. It wasn't as though he was trying to mate with her, it was like he was trying to jump on her head...soon after that she died.

Just today, my broody hen was off her nest and sitting on the ground for a minute and the roo came over and did the same thing to her. She was poofed up (because she was broody and protecting eggs) and she was making weird noises (same reason). I shooed him away from her and was in the coop for awhile until she got back on her nest, and then he didn't bother her anymore.

Any idea what's going on?

animals will kill or run off sick and dying same animals, because they attract predators, its a defence instinct, that is most likly what your roo was doing..if one hen did the poofing/weird noises and then died, and then a second hen did the same thing...I hope you don't have an illness running thru your coop...I have also seen what some have thought to be broody hens, and actualy they were ill, or became ill on the nest, die...it happens, just keep a close eye on your poultry...
