Sophie, my 12 year old German Shepherd is getting ready to undergo surgery today for an emergency spleenectomy. We took her to our vet for totally unrelated symptoms and her bloodwork showed that she was experiencing anemia. He started zeroing in on things and found a mass on her spleen that was hemorrhaging. I had innocently set up an appointment for a fecal exam and bloodwork to determine the cause of this recurrent diarrhea that she had been having, and within an hour we were headed off to the emergency hospital with her. We got home last night at 11:00. They are doing more diagnostics on her this morning to see if there is any sign of metastatic disease before they ever begin surgery. Once they begin, if they begin, there is still possibility that more widespread tumors will be found internally that didn't show up in pre-surgery exams. Please keep Sophie in your thoughts today.

Thank you all so much for your healing thoughts and prayers for Sophie. I am happy to say that she has recovered from her surgery and the only evidence is her shaved parts. I tell people it looks like someone tried to do a poodle cut on a german shepherd. Even her incision is barely noticeable. She is back to her old silly self, playing and eating with gusto.

Sophie did test positive for hemangiosarcoma, so I've been studying the Dog Cancer Survival Guide with the intent to help her maintain a good quality of life, and improve her longevity during this second chance. She had her first chemo treatment last Monday with no visible side effects, thanks to the advice and guidelines in the book. There is so much information in the book that the doctors didn't provide...it pays to educate yourself! I've learned so much in such a short amount of time about canine cancer and how to deal with the disease. So, we are taking a broad spectrum approach and not discounting anything that will help. I'm back to cooking a special diet for her that improves her immune system, and brushing up more on my TTouch and Canine Touch training, which she really seems to enjoy.

Like the saying goes, "..Today is a Gift"!

Paula,

I just found the post about your beautiful Sophie. I will certainly say a prayer for her and for you, too. Four years ago, my beagle was seriously ill with non-regenerative anemia. The diagnosis was grim. But, I didn't give up on her and, after a few transfusions and a lengthy regiment of Doxycycline, she got better. Like your Sophie, Darcy is also 12 years old. I had a prayer chain going for her and would actually lay my hands on her and do accupressure as I prayed over her. I'm sure Sophie can feel your love, which in itself is very healing. Please keep us posted on Sophie's progress. Sending good thoughts your way.

Paula, I just saw this whole thread about Sophie! What a lovely, poor girl. She reminds me of a fox with that beautiful lean snout. We have a GSD, too, Rose, who is 8--we love them like our family, and it's terrible to see them feeling poorly.

Here's good thoughts to Sophie for a speedy recovery from the Lynch-dogs in Kentucky!

Sophie is home. She's kind of a sad looking pup right now. If I can catch her after she has had a peaceful nap I can get her to eat something. I've been doing TTouch for her and it seems to really help her get past some discomfort. She doesn't let me out of her sight much though.

So sorry your dog had to go through the surgery but glad it saved her life and you caught it. Praying she will be able to come home tomorrow where she belongs. Sounds like she is on the mend and that sure is a blessing in itself. Take care and let us know how she is when she is home.

We got to pay a visit to Sophie today. It is an hour drive to the hospital, and it was raining, and every brained dead idiot was out on the road today. Sorry, but it just irritates me how people don't turn their headlights on when it is raining. The spray on the highway is so bad that you cannot see..anyway...I digress.....Sophie was pretty drugged up on pain meds, but seemed glad to see us, and took a little nap while we sat with her. When we left her I think her eyes looked much brighter and she looked more like herself, than the bedraggled pup that came out of the cage when we first arrived. The doctor called a few hours after we were home, and she said that everything still looks good for her to come home tomorrow. So, my husband and I are calling in a personal day to work, and we will bring her home once the doc gives the go ahead. Every day with her is a gift from God and I give thanks that He granted us a little extra time with her.

Sophie is recovering well as of this morning. All of her vital signs are in the normal range, including her platelet count which was so low at the start. It looks like if things continue the way they are, she will be able to come home tomorrow. The biopsies won't be available until probably later in the week.

Thank you for your prayers and meditations!

Hugs to you all,

Paula

Sophie's out of surgery and doing well. The doctor thinks the rupture happened only in the last 24 hours. If I had not happened to take her in for that fecal exam and blood work, she would have probably bled to death in a short time. The next hurdle is to find out what the lab results are on the biopsy.
