We have a lamb!!!!! And from someone that I had NO idea was even pregnant. Darla, the ewe with the cracked hoof a few weeks ago. She had a little black ram lamb a few hours before sun up. He was nearly dry and had already had breakfast. I had no idea that she was pregnant. I just cam ein to see if it could possibly be Earl's and it is not. I got both her and Lucinda Oct. 29th. She was obviously pregnant then. SO hopefully it's a Finn ram. He's adorable! And it was only like 30 degrees last night.

I had gotten up at 4:30 and let the dogs out. I thought I heard a lamb so went out with the flash light and saw all the ewes out there together. Or so I thought. She didn't come to the fence to go next door with the others so I figured something was up. SO got the others next door and went back to check on her. And there he was. Laying down in the straw. I got the iodine spray for his navel and some scissors to cut away the woolies from around her udder. I tried to get some milk going but he''d already been there! So I cut the wool from around the front. My friend is coming in a few weeks to shear the wool sheep. But the lamb is doing great so far.

So Outback Farm #0001 is here and well! Now I have to figure out how to put the ear tag in. I think I'll wait for help on that. I don't want to hurt the little fella.

Linda, I let Darla and the lamb out a little while ago and he met all the other ewes. He was so cute. And they were all good and didn't try to kill him. He ran and jumped some out in the pasture. I put up some fence where I am going to put my corn and bean garden and will let the sheep eat all the grass down for me so I can start tilling soon. Then I'll have it all fenced in and let them back in it when the garden's done. They were all so good while I was putting the fence up and stayed on the right side. Then I put Darla and baby back in the stall. It's raining now. I hope the other ewes don't have their lambs tonight. I have only one stall for them and it's just 3 sided. But I think he's going to be ok. I hate giving shots but I know it will help them. And I found a smaller needle for him.

I'm glad you gave the little guy a shot. I had forgotten that you had treated Earl for that. Hopefully he will recover quickly. He would be a good little ram to keep since he is from different breeding. Praying for good results.

I went ahead and gave him a 0.5 ml shot of LA200 about an hour ago. He is up and eating but I see he's having labored breathing. So just to be on the safe side I went ahead and did that. I don't know if it was enough or not but w'll see soon. I am leaving them in the stall for now because it it a little cooler today and rain is coming this way. He seems good other than this. Eating really good and not dehydrated because he's always peeing whenever I check on him. I did go through the pneumonia with Earl not too long ago and it is scary. I don't want to lose the little fella.

No more lambs yet. I sure wish they's hurry up and get this over with. I hate waiting. And I am tired of looking at sheep and goat rear ends. And I am sure they are tired of me doinf it.

Kris when I had sheep I always ivomeced them to make sure I covered internal and external parasites. Sheep tend to have more of a problem with this. As far as vacines go we always did the CDT shot right around 3 weeks. Thats when they usually start chewing their cud.

Lambs are also predisposed to getting phemonia. I had that quite a few times with my wool sheep. The lady I bought them from said worms and phemonia were the biggest killer of sheep. She raised suffulk sheep for 40 years. Anyway hope the little guy is okay. Other people may do things differently but thats what I had done for years and then went to safeguard to cover the tapes and sometimes used Valbazen too. Maybe someone else will have a better suggestion that works really well also.

I use to have sheep but couldn't do the shearing anymore and could not find a shearer to do the shearing for me. I miss my sheep so much. I still have 23 bags of their beatiful wool to spin.
Good luck.

Thanks, Laurie. You have to start somewhere, right? And chickens are probably the best way to learn. And rabbits are nice to have. I have had them before but they require a little more work than I want to do right now. I would like to have a rabbit for fiber though. So who knows?

Sherrye, you should get a few sheep. They are so fun and very peaceful animals. I love looking out in the pasture and seeing them grazing all lined up. And in the morning they do "Ring around the rosie" with each other. So funny. And they are so much easier than goats. But I love my goats too. They jsut aren't the same.

This morning I picked up the little lamb while Darla was eating. He sounded a little bit congested. But I'm not sure if it was because I was holding him or not. So I left them in today. It's a little cooler. I did let them out in the small yard yesterday. Maybe it was too much for him? I am going to keep an eye on him today just in case. He is getting plenty og milk because he is always peeing.

I talked to Leslie a few days ago and she gives her sheep diotemacious earth as a wormer. SO I am mixing about a T. per morning feeding. And I did that with the other ewes this morning in their feed. I have seen no evidence of them being wormy yet so this is just a precaution right now.

Looks like rain later today.

Just saw this post Kris- Wow Congratulations Grandma!
How exciting is that. Hope Grace comes back on and can answer your questions. It amazes me how much y;all know about the farm critters- as of yet I only have hens and will be getting some rabbit kits in a few weeks. Slowly building my little suburban homestead!
I really enjoy reading your posts!
Good luck!

Angie, only 1 so far. But they can have that many. I know. Pretty darn scary if you ask me. I am not ready to have to bottle feed that many of they all survived. But hopefully, being first timers, they will only have sinlges or twins.

Nothing else this morning. The other ewes were all ready to go back across the driveway and munch on pretty green spring grass for the day. I really can't figure when the 3 Katahdin ewes will lamb. But I would almost bet it will be this month. I hope not too long because I want #0001 to have buddies to play with.

I let Darla and baby outside this morning. They are over there by theirselves right now. So he can get out and explore and get some sun. I went ahead and banded his long black tail this morning too, while they were still in. He pees all the time so I know he's getting plenty of good milk. I trimmed around her udder some more too. She's a good momma. I am so glad.

Now to find that stinkin' camera to take some pictures. A friend is coming today to learn how to make soap and she's really computer smart. Maybe she can get some on here for me and teach me how.

Momma and son are doing great so far. Darla is wanting out. But it's going to be cold again tinight and windy so they're staying inside. I hope the rest don't decide they want to have lambs tonight.

And yes, this was quite a surprise. An added bonus I guess. Now if Lucinda has lambs, I WILL be surprised. I hope she does. But not too many the first time. I heard Finn ewes can have up to 8 lambs at one time.

I got some batteries for my camera. They didn't have litium but I got the max so I hope I can take a few pictures with them. And I will try to get some on here myself. We'll see.

That was my first thought, to keep him and use him with the other ewes. And Earl would have a buddy. Or I might see about trading him for another ram so I can use him with Darla. I don't want too many rams here.

I'll try to get my daughter to come out and take pictures soon. My mom's 80th birthday party will be here the 18th so hopefully by then they will all have had their lambs so I can get a group shot. He's so cute. He'll probably not stay black though. Earl was solid black when I got him and now he looks like a Suffolk. Darla does too but with a brown face and legs. She's half Suffolk and half Finn. Her fleece is about 5" now.

I am going to show my dumbness now and ask a few stupid questions. I hope Grace is still on. Do I give lambs CDT shots at 2 weeks like I do the goat kids? And what about worming the ewes? I usually worm the does a day after kidding, with Cydectin first. Then Ivermec 2 weeks later. Or vice versa. What's a good sheep wormer? I'm going to town and can go to the co-op then. I was going to wait til I take my dog to the vet to get spayed on the 15th to get some Cydectin. Anyway, any advice would be great from you shepherdesses.

And thank you all for the nice comments. I always get so excited this time of year. I love my sheep! And now little bouncing jumping happy lambs!
