I was soooo wrong about my bees. It was in the low 60's today when we came home from work. As our usual routine goes, the dogs eat, and then I take Beauregard, our 12 year old coonhound up the driveway to get the mail...his important duty is to check for pee-mail and leave a daily deposit somewhere in the tall grass. While we were out, I thought I got buzzed by a bee. I was afraid I was imagining things.
So, back inside I got chicken treats together and went out the back to feed horses and gather eggs, thinking that I'd better check those hives. Sure enough, there was a small cloud of bees around both hives and there was a definite, DEFIANT hum in the air...like 'don't give up on us, lady....we are strong, we girls don't give up!' I was so happy I could have cried. There must have been just enough chill in the air the days I checked on them that they were all inside in cluster. There is still a massive amount of dead bees around the hives, but if there is enough to maintain and if the queen is still alive then they all just might make it.

Then I checked the nest boxes, and my six lovely lady hens laid 6 eggs today. The girls are going strong on all fronts!!

Thank you ladies! I think I'm the only one I know who looks forward to seeing dandelions in the Spring. Most people in these parts are out applying pre-emergent on their lawns to prevent them. But they are one of the first available food sources around here for the bees, and I hope I see some popping up soon!

So many people do not realize how IMPORTENT bees are to life on this planet, without bees, our world would die, no pollination=no plants, no plants=no plant eating animals= no humans...so I am Very glad your hive is alive, and will be fine...

Wonderful, I know how sad it is to lose a hive, all of those dead bees you are seeing are probably the winter dieoff and the living girls were housecleaning, moving them outside.
