It was 65 degrees today, and the girls decided to spend some time hanging out on the front porch. I took this photo right before I was unceremoniously escorted away by a guard bee, who thought I was being too nosy.

Things were busy over at the top bar hive too. If you squint just right you can see them coming in for a landing and the crowd of them hanging around the opening.

I saw one or two buzzing around the empty hive..maybe checking it out for some expansion space!

I've been planning on feeding pollen patties too, but I've been hesitant to crack the seal on their hives, for fear that we will get thrown in the deep freeze again, and I don't want them to use energy puttying up the cracks on the inside with their propolis. I think I'll wait until March before I break out the pollen patties here in Missouri.

I made a pie plate-sized sugar candy and put it in the hive with our girlsin January. I fed sugar water with Honey Bee Healthy in December. I am going to Conroe this weekend and get some pollen substitute for them and will put that in next week. I am looking for to harvesting this year, especially since hubby cannot eat refined sugars anymore, I am learning to cook with honey and buy locally when I don't have my own.

I've been feeding the bees in the Warre hive all winter since it has been so warm. Whenever we have a spell where it is 45 or warmer, I pour about a liter of syrup with a touch of Honey Be Healthy into their feeder. Since they have been more active, they get more hungry and tend to eat more honey than when it it is very cold and they don't use much energy. I haven't fed the top bar hive, but I didn't take any honey from them, so I figured they are probably in good shape. By the looks of their activity yesterday, I guessed right! This is the second winter for this top bar hive, and the first for the Warre hive.

congrats on your girls making it through the winter! WE are not that warm, but in the 30's. Both my hives were out and about the last warm spell we had.
