Posted - Jan 28 2012 : 05:49:50 AM Hi Farmgirls!
As many of you know, I have two pet elderly cats. My male Maine Coon is getting older for sure. Anyway, he has started "howling" in the middle of the night in the hallway between all the bedrooms. (He usually sleeps in my daughter's bedroom). This has been occurring at about 3 AM and is happening more frequently. The first time it happened it scared me - I thought he was dying! Found him in the hallway with his toy mouse he carries around the house. He's starting to hobble with age, but is still pretty spry and in really good health. What's weird is he has never done this before and is really a very quiet cat. His name is Badger (he was a stray the vet gave me years ago) and if he hadn't had a name, I would've named him "Squeek" because his meow is usually so quiet. The last cat that did this was my Angel who died last summer at 20. She was loud like this because she was stone deaf and also had signs of dementia. Does anyone else have cats that do this? Is this something that happens with age? I asked my friend who is a vet and she didn't really think too much about it.

Posted - Feb 03 2012 : 4:54:49 PM Renee, I just turned down dd's bed, and there was Marty Mouse! I had changed the sheets earlier in the day, and noticed he had gotten up on her clean bed asleep this afternoon. I may have to hide the mice at night, like you said. Badger in his young glory days was a good mouser, maybe he is pretending it's a real mouse.

Posted - Feb 02 2012 : 1:11:01 PM I have a cat that has a toy mouse and he'll do the same thing! Always waits till night, maybe because cats tend to be more nocturnal? I have to hide the mouse or else I can't get any sleep. We had a cat that would do the same thing with real mice (she was an outside mouser). Whenever she would have a kill, she would bring it to the window by the deck and meow (mouth full) and keep doing it till we would go to the back door and tell her what a good kitty she was, then she would go out and eat what she killed. Maybe your kitty is bringing you his "kill"...

Posted - Jan 31 2012 : 12:30:12 PM My husband always says that about our cat who does the same thing. His name is Opus. And whenever Opus is sleeping in the chair during the day, Jay will always go over and wake him up and say "How do you like it, eh?" Makes me giggle everytime. I think we should just go over to Opus and drop things on his head like he does to us at night!

Posted - Jan 31 2012 : 08:58:49 AM Well, think Marly is right. It's Badger's new way of bringing us "Marty Mouse". Whenever he's doing this, he's got his mouse around, this little stuffed toy. I think he thinks he is a dog. Maybe I should wake HIM up from his daily naps...

Posted - Jan 28 2012 : 4:03:03 PM Nicole, its the strangest thing...isn't it? We have a cat that does that too! I think its odd that your cat has suddenly started doing it when he never did it before. Maybe he's trying something new in his old age? I hope its nothing serious! :)

Posted - Jan 28 2012 : 08:27:31 AM Nicole: I did have a cat that howled at night. He would wait until we were asleep, then he would bring his assortment of toys, one by one, to our bedroom. When Henry Dragon would get in the hall, he'd start the catterhowling!!!! We eventually got used to it. As he'd come in with each toy, he'd jump on the bed and place the toy on my neck. In the morning, I had a neckless of toys around my neck. After he'd bring all the toys, he'd settle down next to me and sleep. I miss that. Hugs to Badger. Marly
