I have a gander I got for free in exchange for teaching someone how to process ducks.
He's a beautiful African, and VERY sweet. Unlike most drakes. I love geese! Sure some of em can be nasty, but they are so beautiful and are really smart!
I'm going to order some new goslings from Metzer this spring. I thought I'd try the "fancy goose package" with surprise breeds in it, +1 baby girl african ;)
Do you have geese? Do you love them or hate them? What kind of geese do you have? I'd love some cotton patch geese but I can't really justify 50$ per gosling unless I was starting a heritage flock.

Hi Leslie, The best way I found to get adult geese I have brought home to like me was time spent with them. I would go and just sit in the pen, talk to them and of course give them treats, meal worms, bread or berries. Just sitting there talking and let them just wonder around getting use to my present and such. It takes time but they do come around. Good luck, hugs Karla

I was just given two geese. They're 1 year old and both females. They're either Emden or White Chinese. I know nothing about geese but have a lovely large yard and they "seem" to be adapting well. They follow the chickens around and are sometimes chased by my little dog, Lulu.
The man they originated from said they don't need a pond and that in fact, standing water isn't good for them. A river? Yes. But that I shouldn't worry because as long as they have plenty of fresh drinking water, they'll be happy.
Do you think they will ever bond with us? Being one year old already, I worry that they will never come close enough to get a lovely neck rub, etc.
Does anyone out there have any advice for me on what I can do to bring these beauties close to me?
From my home in Italy, to yours.. wherever that may be. |

twisted wing, also called angel wing is a hereditary problem, which is highly comman in the sebastopols and some other breeds (I have seen it in Africans and Toulouse also). All breeding with goose and ganders that are throwing angel wing should stop, in order to stop the gene pool that is responsible, too many 4-h projects are going down the drain every year due to these kind of genetic problems, and it also cause some pain in the geese...

I like geese, we had a variety of them growing up. Right now I do not have any, but want to get some Sebastopols and Pilgrims. Megan, if you will be selling hatching sebastopol eggs I'm interested.

We got geese out here, we have 4 giant dewlap Toulouse, and about 20 sebastopols. we will be selling eggs in the spring if you want to try and hatch your own. our geese are super nice. be careful not to feed alot of protein, let them grow real slow other wise you can get slipped wing and twisted wing

We have had geese for almost 20 years, mostly African browns,old age took the last of them this past summer. Hubby has been saying recently he misses seeing them moving across our property grazing, and doing goose business. I was chased as a child, but I always thought geese were majestic and beautiful. I will be looking for goslings this spring and if I don't find any, I will order next spring and raise them myself, just like I did with my first flock of 5. I have never had a "bad" goose here, just some "fradiy cat" relatives and visitors. Ours were mostly curious about stangers, and the only time they got agressive was when they had goslings. I have had Africans, it seems like forever...love them, currently I have 3 pairs, and I too get 3-4 goslings from each pair, each spring. I also have a mixed breed chicken hen who will set on 2-3 goose eggs for me , then when they hatch, the comedy is on, cause she turns herself inside out with worry when her large babies jump in the water, she will run around the small pool, talking like crazy till they come out, they she will stuff them all under her until they are dry...

Hi Dusky Beauty, I am a goose lover, I had a pair of Africans for a number of years until their old years took them away from me. They gave me gooslings every year (three or four) which I gave away to friends. They were good parents, the gander only became protective when they had eggs or little ones. I now have one mixed and one Canadian goose, I don't recommend the Canadian geese unless you have a large pond, they fly. Picture this, a small pond, and a over fifty out of shape woman running down the road after a low flying goose trying to get to the nice large pond at the neighbors. Yes I now keep the wings clipped. But they are both so nice and fun to have around. I to am ordering come next month a couple of Africans, they are my favorite and they are good alarm systems. |
