My daughter wants me to sew a fleece blanket for her horse, that she can pull over herself to cover her own legs (and the horse) while riding in winter.
I tried googling for pictures, but can't find any. Do you know what she's talking about? Would love some insight on this.

I think what you're looking for is a quarter sheet... never used them because I've always felt that if I needed to do a emergency dismount or started to come off a horse, it might be a problem with the quarter sheet on. However, if you're daughter's horse is dead broke and you're confident she's not going to get into a sticky situation with having to get off asap I'd go for it. You might be able to find a old fleece blanket at a thrift shop, and cut it down to fit your daughter/horse perfectly! I cut up an old felt blanket one time to use as a blanket liner for one of my hard to fit horses.

I've used these blankets and seen them used for years with no issue. Even on less than quiet younger, hot horses.
Just make sure you line yours with something slick so you don't shock the horse. Now *that* creates excitement! LOL

My friend has a couple of horses and she uses the masks, but I have noticed that they get torn up pretty easy. The one horse went after the other one and he had one on too. What is one suppose to do?? |

I use this type of blanket and have never had a problem. I agree you should trust your horse with a blanket but they are very safe. I use the same blanket my grandma rode with. It is amazing.

I don't do anything until I am camping. Then I will spray the horses because they are in a corral and can't move much. I don't do anything about the flies--just the mosquitos. Most of the time it's more for my peace of mind because no product I have tried, chemical or natural, works longer than about 20 minutes. I used to put fly masks on them. But shortly after, I have to walk the pasture in a grid to find them. So I just leave them off.

Her horse is used to having a blanket, but the stable horses tore her blanket up and off of her. We don't want to keep buying blankets.
I have shared my concerns with her, and she may decide not to go this route. Thanks.

I agree about it being a safety concern. They are often used for stabled horses when they ride out in the cold because the horse isn't used to/coated for the cold. If that is the reason she wants it I would make sure the horse is amazingly desensitized before using. If it is just for her comfort I suggest some silk thermal underwear. You can buy it at a sporting store or even Walmart and it would probably cost the same as the supplies for the quarter sheet but would keep your daughter warmer.

That was my first thought as well...something to get tangled up in, or be a distraction...
I'd rather wear a nice pair of leather chaps, would protect your legs better and keep them warmer.

I know they have breakaway parts, but it looks to me like something to get tangled up in...Safety first. Go to www.doversaddlery.com and look up riding blanket to see them in their catalog.

what would work better, is a "Duster" coat, they are made to ride in with split back, and leg straps, I have one that has a button in micro-fleece liner, works great and also most are rain resitent
