We moved on our farm in late October and my little city bantams have been slowly adjusting to animal and farm noises. We now have room for full size chickens and I have been studying all the catalogs! I ordered heritage breeds from two sources: Sand Hill Preservation Center and Mr. Duane Urch from Owatonna, MN. Both men have been credited with saving several heritage breeds. Can't wait to pick up those chirping little boxes at the post office in March! Now to finish our garden seed order....

Meg, I am a regular on the backyard chickens boards and I have only heard great things about sand hill, I'm sure you made an excellent choice! I focus on my ducks for eggs but I'm eyeing up chickens "for the future" now. I will probably just get some fast broilers the first time but I'm really thinking about some marans. The dark eggs are positively gorgeous. Dual purpose is really the way a homestead maintained flock should lean in my opinion. Dorkings are awful pretty too in their way.
