I'm going to the Humane Society to look at a Cairn they posted online. Don't tell my husband, not sure he's ready for a new love yet...But since the passing of my Hobbs, my Cairn momminess has been without an outlet. I NEED to be a Cairns mommy! We'll see, they listed him as a "cream" coat, that sounds like he might be a dirty (unclean but still cute) Westie!

Good boy Hobbs! I love and miss you.

Thanks ladies! Natalie, I think I'm drawn to the dark ones so that I don't feel like I'm trying to replace Hobbs. Never thought that someone might mistake the new one for Hobbs so that's an excellent point why I should go for a different color. Trish, it was hard not to bring the mix home when I went to look at him. So I'm glad I didn't bring DH along. Gave me an excuse to leave him and then when I was not in his cute presense I could resist his sad little eyes. Debbie, thanks for the input on the people you know who adopted a rescue. I feel pretty good about the one the dark Cairn is at since he's in a private foster home and you have to agree to return him to the rescue if things don't work out. I think because of that they will be very honest with his temperment and personality. Unlike the shelter I viewed the Cairn mix at, they just want him out the door whether it's the right fit or not.

Oh Audrey, sure hope you can find a way to get this little guy, he is so sweet and would love to be a part of your home, family and life. At least with the Rescue folks you know usually you are getting exactly what they say, I know so many folks who have adopted from the different Rescue groups across the United States and it has all worked out.
Good Luck and I will pray that it all works out like it is suppose to for you, your family and the little guy.

Farmgirl Hugs,
Deb

Audrey,
I had people on craigslist tell me they had a full Cairn, but he was 1/2 Chihuahua. I bought him anyway because the people were very destitute. I rehomed him, because he wouldn't stop biting out big dog.
So, you are smarter than me to follow your feelings about if a pup is right for your family.

Oh he's so cute! And as a bonus, he doesn't look like Hobbs, so you won't have to deal with people you know calling him Hobbs when you take him out :)

Hopefully everything works out and you're able to get him!

Had a discussion with DH tonight and he said it was up to me when I thought I'd be ready for a new dog. His only stipulation was that we pay off our credit cards first which got charged up with Hobbs' final expenses (dental a month before he died, several major tests to diagnose his illness and his final surgery and days in the hospital). That and we'll know better about DH's employment situation (it's uncertain right now)in the coming months. So, hopefully I'll be able to get me a new love early next year. I can't wait! I want one now! But I can wait. It will give me something to look forward to in the dreary winter months ahead!

Sigh...Whitman was a real cutie but the ad for him was a bit lacking. First of all he was a mix and therefore other than his face he didn't look like a Cairn although the website said he was just a Cairn. He's about 5 years old which would be OK but I find out he must be in a home with no other pets (we have talked about having lots of Cairns). And the website said the adoption fee was $125.00 and I get there and his cage say $175.00! So despite him walking very well on a leash and being quite the gentleman, I don't believe he's right for us. I walked him and petted him and talked to him but just don't think he's the one. He's very cute and well behaved and in a no-kill shelter so I'm sure someone will come bring him to his new home.

I keep coming back to one I saw on a Cairn Rescue website. Sounds just what I'm looking for, but he's in Minnesota! That's close to 900 miles away and he hates crates so they said they wouldn't ship him by air. Plus I really think I should meet him first. I don't mind travelling to see him so much but I'm not sure my 14 yeear old, 170,000 mile car will make it there and back and in the middle of winter no less! Still...I'll have to ponder a way to get there and back safely...I've got a friend who's also a dog nut and she has a new car...I wonder if she'd be up for a road trip with me?

I guess this just tells me I'm definitely ready to heal and think a new friend would help me do that. I had a dream a couple of nights ago that Hobbs and I were walking and a big dog was charging us (happened many times in real life) when I went to scoop him up (the best way I found to protect him in these situations)I came up with another Cairn and Hobbs was safe but some distance away nodding his head in approval. I take that as him giving me permission to get a new love, someone who needs me to protect them.

I'll keep you updated on the search. Thanks for all your well wishes.

Audrey

I know how you feel Audrey! When Sky-Dog passed away I felt so cut adrift. I just looked at petfinder wondering how I would feel about ever getting another dog and saw the listing for Stormie's litter. Sometimes I think the animal that left us helping us heal so that we can open up to another friend :)

I can't wait to hear, Audrey! You just never know who's going to "speak" to your heart. I know how your husband feels, but you might just be surprised if you bring a little fuzz bucket home.

Keep us posted!!!!

Good luck! I hope he is just what you both need. It is always hard to know when you are ready for a new little furry kid in the house but I think they help you heal so much that if you can do sooner rather than later it is a good thing. Please let us know if your date turns into something more.
