Does anyone here have pigs? Just curious because the farm (that our closing has been delayed on) was a pig farm and still has two hog barns standing with a ton of equipment in them. People we know hear this and immediately start asking me if I will raise a pig for them. You know the "If I bring you a couple pigs and provide the food, will you take care of them for me..." I keep telling everyone I know NOTHING about pigs and they aren't high on my list of priorities...but now the kids are talking about wanting pigs.

Who here has pigs that I can talk to a little more to learn a few things and make some decisions for the future?

i do feed mine meat. they are meat eaters. some say raw meat will make them mean. i have never had that happen. we have fed meat for 20 years worth of feeding pigs. i have fed raw and cooked. they eat wild animals in the forest if wild. so why not in my pen? i do like kris does. i go get the meat trim from the butcher. i cook mine usually. i put it in the beans i cook in roasters every night for them. i have to cook the beans. beans pinto etc. have an enzyme in the skin that stops animals from gaining weight. so we cook daily for our pigs. hope this helps. our pigs eat foods that we gather from a chain of stores dumping produce and barley from a brewery. then the meat from the butcher. so very well fed and no pig pellet. we have the laying hens on this program also. they are still laying now. just my humble opinion. happy days sherrye

good morning farmgirls we butchered a pig yesterday it hung at 186 pounds. just right for the folks that bought it. some olks like way bigger ones she had 1 inch of back fat. we think it was perfect. this one is sold. we have 1 more that is sold and 2 to sell they will not be ready for a couple months. just thought i would add that pigs do not sweat. hence they need a water hole in summer. we warmed up to 27 drgrees yipee.

well i am wondering what your questions are? we have been able to connect with folks and get food for our pigs for free. in the past we had to supplement with a pellet for pigs. it was a non gmo made locally. now we have the spent barley from a brewery for our protein. it is a sprouted barley that is steamed. we feed it most times hot.. i must say if a pig gets sick on a food they will never eat it again. they are very smart. as with all stock before a pedigree i put attitude. if they get too rowdy i butcher them. mostly i can go in and clean their pens while they are in there. they run and bark and are all happy. when we throw them hay they roll in it and smile. they must have 16 percent protein to grow. just like a little human. they are very much like us. they love sweets.LOL regardless of breed i believe in electric wire. we use hog panels and heavy electric wire. the electric works. otherwise they accidently root the fence line and get out. NOT on purpose. nose rings come out but wire is always hot. now and then they get excited and bump it. we hear them yelp. we say yup fence works. we are just now learning to breed them. sammy and major have been romancing for 2 days. i am hopeful but guarded too. i so want babies. we tried with a different sow. she was no good. so we are eating her. we now have sam and major and one more sow to try. you need to ask me questions if i can help. i will ask my friend to take some photos. major weighs about 1100 pounds. he is a big boy. it was 9 degrees this morning. cold but happy days sherrye

Sherrye, you are the woman I want to learn about raising pigs from!! I'm not in position to do it right now but I'm definately interested in doing it. Castrating doesn't intimidate me at all. And if the animal has been raised properly and killed humanely, I'm all for raising and butchering all my own meat.

Excuse the mess & the noise, my children are making happy memories

well i would be saying a big YES YES YES. i LOVE pigs. they are easy happy joyful animals. we do not dip in hot water. we skin ours. they have a fine happy life here before they go. i make GOOD money on every one. even if i had to buy my pig food and it was all i had i would make money. i have been doing this almost 20 years. i had one prolapse rectum on a pig. other than that all pigs have been healthy. right now we have one sow one boar and 3 butchers growing. plus one girl who we decided to keep and breed also. then one goes this week. last week we sent 2 the hung at 220 pounds and 166 pounds. i let the folks pick the size they want. they are clean and friendly and sooo smart. our 1100 pound boar is a sweet guy. they poop in one place only. if you have land they love to run and chase each other. ours are so lean at butcher time the guys complain about how careful they need to be. so to not nick the meat. they is little fat trim for rendering. any way i would love to have a set up already done by some one in the know. maybe later after you settle in you might consider it. there is a good market for humane healthy pork. you only grow them around 5 months. PLUS with all that old poop you can have a great garden. happy days for you with a new farm to move into. sherrye

You know Trish, I think you said it perfectly. "Having a farm is not just feeding animals." I think the next time someone tells me something about raising a pig for them (or anything else) I'll sweetly smile and say "you know, having a farm isn't just about feeding the animal. Would you like some more banana bread?" ;)

Ask your boys how much they would like castrating piglets.
Having a farm is not just feeding animals. You should tell your relatives that. Make them watch a castration and a butcher. No one wants to know about dipping your pig in hot boiling water, or oil, or whatever that is.
