Mindy the pony has been part of the family since my mother bought her for my sister to ride. She carried my sister, my brother, and each of my children and it seems like the end is near.

She can't get up int the morning without help anymore, her molars are worn down to nothing, she's really unsteady on her feet and I'm pretty positive she is only gumming and tasting her mash, not actually eating it.
We're trying to decide if we should let her pass naturally, or if we should end it for her while we know she is comfortable and sunning herself.
She doesn't appear to be in pain, and she is still "in it" enough to want to get up and get to her bucket.
What's your opinion?

Eh, the gals were nice enough, but firm because they have to be. If they don't say things like "felony" and "jail" bad people wouldn't take them seriously. Doing that job would make me pretty hard too.

They asked my mom yesterday what she intended to do about the ducks not having a population explosion because I have a few I'm trying to get an egg business going with, so we had a good laugh about my special needs drake (the only boy I have) not being able to catch any of the girls to fertilize eggs without the aid of a wheelchair!

Oh I'm so sorry. Losing a horse is so heartbreaking. I've lost dogs, cats, and other pets...but something about losing a horse just leaves a shot-gun blast sized hole in your heart...

Well, it's been taken out of my hands. Someone made a complaint that one of the other horses was loose in the front yard (He wasn't, he was tethered to a tree to graze the green stuff like every day) and the Sherrif came out and got a look at the poor girl while he was there. So-- I had a cruelty investigator out today. They agreed with what we already knew: she's 30 plus and has no teeth and no longer has what it takes to maintain and she ordered us to euthanize her immediately.
The funny thing is that Our appy gets tethered outside every single day for the last... oh... 5 months and today is when they came. Guess God's calling her home and my mom needed the extra push to let her go.

Mindy will let you know, you will feel it in your heart. Our dear old Butch cat was 30 days shy of 16, he stopped grooming himself, but was eating and sunning, napping in my lap daily. Then the last day, I looked in those beautiful yellow eyes and told him how much I loved him, how I did not want to be without "old gravel purrs, but if he was ready go on, cross the rainbow bridge and I will come when it is my time. We found him the next day, looked like he got a drink of water and laid down by the pond and passed. I get teary just remembering, I still miss "old gravel purrs" and it has been 12 years.

Sweet pony. Last year my Nevada got sick. I didn't know what was wrong and brought in the vet. She said at first colic but then it didn't go the way it was suppose to. Turned out to be neurological. I'm told there aren't any happy endings to those problems. Anyways, I refused to give up until she did. I had her almost 18 years. Loved her SO much. Watching her suffering was killing me. But she kept trying and so I kept trying. But when she couldn't get up and was holding her head up with her muzzle...... I knew it was time. I couldn't stand the thought of letting her continue to suffer (she WAS in pain) and so I called the vet in again. She's buried on my place and I go stand by her grave and cry. I expected to have so much more time with her because Peruvian Pasos are quite long lived horses, so to have her leave so suddenly, so early..... I feel your pain. And I agree with the others. As long as she isn't suffering let her tell you when she's done.

Excuse the mess & the noise, my children are making happy memories

Well... after two days of having to haul her off of the ground with the help of 3 adults and hold her steady for 20 minutes till she got her balance, I went outside late last night and she nickered at me. I had a sweet fuji apple in my hand and I would bite off a piece, pre chew it, and spit it back out into my hand to give to her. Oh she was so happy. This morning, she wasn't even on the ground. I think she's holding out for more of those apples!!! LOLOLOL Mindy goes another day!

Oh, Jen, so sad! We are saying goodbye to our very old cat... same thing, though, there still seems to be a bit of joy in her life. I said before in my post about her, cats and dogs should live as long as parrots. Horses, too! Hugs to you and your family.

OH Jen, I do feel for you. I just had to put down our cat after 15 years and it was the hardest thing I think I have ever had to do. We got Arty at a yard sale, he was the runt and last one there. He was my daughter's baby and he pretty much grew up with her. Sweetest and biggest cat you could ever find. She taught him so many things and being 23 pounds we called him our cat dog because he was truly more of a dog than a cat! When I took him to the vet and she told me what was wrong she said if I didn't put him down he would eventually suffocate. As luck would have it my daughter was coming home that weekend so we postponed it until the following Monday so she could say her good byes.

But I know you will know when the time is right. If she still has an interest in getting up and eating, that should be a good sign, right? I'd worry when she isn't doing that but then, I'm not a vet.

Good luck, I will keep you in my prayers.

It's always sad when a beloved animal is facing her final days. I agree that she'll let you know when it's time--animals get this far-away look in their eyes when they know it's their time. I will pray that she passes peacefully in her sleep, but if not, you'll know when she's ready.

she will tell you when its time, an animal that has been there for so long with a family, whether it be dog, cat or horse will be able to make their wishes known, and as long as there is no pain...let her make her own choice, and with abit of luck for her and you, she will make her journey in her sleep...

Watching a pet of any kind is quite hard & saying goodbye especially. I never realize it until few years back when we have to put our dog to sleep. We didn't want to put her to sleep but the vet say she was bleeding internally. My husband say Annie it is best for her. I was crying my head off and didn't want too but the doctor say she won't feel anything. She was not eating and it is very very sad but at the end she is no longer in pain. Do talk with your family and decide what is best for her. I know it is hard. Hugs.
