So, while DH and I went to count our cows, I noticed my pet steer has a HUGE growth on his hip/round area. DH said that he's going to try and look it up and call the vet tomorrow. Obie (That's his name) doesn't seem to be in pain, although he is limping on it-it almost seems stiff-but this growth is HUGE! HUGE. We've got him separated from everyone else, but, I can't help but think the worst. Could it be cancer? A really bad infection? The steer is eating fine, and no cows seem to have this weird growth either. Any help?

Well, no blood when the growth was poked, so, it's an injury. He's got 1b week to make a magical recovery-then it's off to the slaughterhouse. :(

Holy Smokes! I wish I was better at this stuff. My friend is a rancher and vet tech and is dating a vet.... I always ask her my animal health questions, she's like a walking encylopedia. I hope you get answers soon.

I would think the vet would want to do more than "lance it, and SEE if its infected", I would think he would want to do an ultrasound to see what that shows before he opens it, anything that grows that fast and big would really make me nervous...good luck

I guess the vet is going to lance it to see if it's infected. Oh joy!!!

Well, I'm being told it's an inflamed injury from horsing around with other cattle.

I'm having a hard time swallowing that.

even if it is an abcess, it is still huge in 7 days, and opening it even with just a large bore needle to see it it will drain, he is still gonna need it to be cleaned out via incisions with drain tubes and antibiotics possibly being delivered I.V., then being a beef steer, don't know if I would ever consider butchering him to eat after that...

Nah-7 days ago he was healthy and normal. I'm thinking it's an abcess of some sort. Tomorrow we're going to stick it-the vet said to try that before he comes out-and see if the fluid leaves. :(

That is huge, and you say its 7 days old, I would have the vet out right now...I would not even attempt to guess what it is...Good Luck

Got a pic-a few, actually.

I'm sorry they are sideways. I just know it's not bloat. I think it's an abcess or infection of some sort.

I'm going to remind DH to call the vet today. He likes to "Forget" things until it's too late. This thing showed up within the last 7 days. It's HUGE-like, a basketball-sized growth-lump above his hip and behind his stomach-it goes over to that kinda soft area. I feel so bad for him!!!! He's in the sorting pen now, so I'll be able to go check on him during the day.

is it a growth on the out side? like a giant thing growing on him? is it inside the hip and skin. my steer had a swollen back hip and a limp. we realized one of the cows was coming in and they mounted him. it hurt him for about 2 months. he is better now. i ask if it is on the outside since giant warts are scary. remember freckles had the warts. let us know what vet says. i wil be wondering. hope its something simple. sherrye

When was the last time you checked on him, you need to know the time line on the growth, and I would never guess , and without seeing him and knowing that time line, thats all it would be is a guess, and not even an educated one...hang tuff and wait for the Vet's ruleing...

It's his RIGHT side-not his left-so bloat is out.
