Anyone have a good method for getting rid of bot flies? My horse seems to have gotten them pretty bad this year. I spent about half an hour scraping eggs off her fur and applying SWAT to the sites. Yuck. I sprayed her coat down with fly spray and am going out again on Sunday. Due to other things going on I haven't been out to see her for about a month and it looks like that must have been their busy time. They are so gross!

I just leave the eggs on although I think they look bad, especially on a dark horse. I have tried scraping them off and my horses protest. I also worm with liquid ivermectin. I have never seen a larvae under the skin or a resulting wound. I have seen the larvae in manure. Now THAT is gross.

I have used a scraping block and a bot knife...I do NOT like the knife. Going to give the Bag Balm idea a try! Now is also the time to worm with a Boticide.

That's good to know Tina. I was thinking about bag balm but since I already had the SWAT on hand I used that. Next time I am at the store I will buy one of those big tubs of bag balm. It really is a miracle ointment. I love that stuff!

it's really messy, but you can coat the eggs and egg areas with bag balm, and they will die, plus the flies won't lay anymore there...

Well I spent about 2 hours today scraping bot fly eggs off. The wounds I saw were not puffy today and had healed. Also the owner of her pasture mate- a wonderful older gentleman was out today. I explained about the bot flies and the treatment. I offered to deworm his horse for him since he usually pays the vet ($80!!) to worm her. He is such a nice guy but I think he is having a hard time doing all the things that I do for my horse. I am going out tomorrow and will remove some of the eggs if he hasn't already.

We've had a BAD problem with them this year (Took a larvae bot fly out of a kitten) I got flysheets, and flymasks, and some flyspray that is supposed to repel them. Also, those razors are a good idea. I've used a disposable razor to get them off of my guy's legs. I'll have to find the thread I posted earlier about this...

ICK! We don't have horses, but we have lots of stray cats who show up here with them - well, at least the worm under their skin. Talk about nasty!! Hope you can get rid of them, Alee!

I am hoping so as well. I am going out on Sunday to deworm her- she is due but not past due and I am going to give her a bath with Dawn. I am hoping that will get rid of some of the eggs that are maybe hiding on the backside of the hair. Yuck yuck yuck!

I hope she does not already have bot larve under the skin, can cause some nasty skin infections and scars, what I use in orange oil, I mist it on and it repells, good luck...

Alee, the only way I have ever gotten rid of them is scraping them off and I have applied a thin coat of vaseline to help keep them off. Also, sometimes they are worse if its past due their worming. Good luck.
