There are several wonderful, tear jerker books out regarding the search and rescue dogs at ground zero, their handlers haveing to deal with the emotions, not only they felt, but their dogs also, most S & R dogs are trained to find lost humans, not remains, and even thou some liveing were found, it took a huge toll on the dogs that were finding only the remains, on top of the dust which caused so much damage to their lungs, cause they couldn't wear respiraters...they were cutting them selves, getting burned and wearing down their pads till they bled, even with booties and heavy canvas vests, but they would not quit, their handlers would have to carry them away to rest, and even then, their instincts told them there were many more to find, and they would whine and scratch at their crate doors to get out and continue, the vets that were on scene would have to tranq many of them, just so they would rest, so in your memorials please remember the 4 legged that gave themselves, every fiber of themselves to try and find anyone still alive, and bring clousure to the families of the lost by locating their remains...

Each night, Violet and I say a prayer in our house before we go to sleep, after we've said "goodnight" to our 4 dogs by name, and our 2 cats (and the books, and toys and even curtains at times :)), and it says, "Dear Father, hear and bless thy beasts and singing birds; And guard with tenderness small things that have no words." I get all teary eyed when she says it with her "2 year old" voice...

@Karen, have you ever heard of Sgt. Reckless? I urge you to look her up on the internet. Read a very moving piece about this Korean war era horse in Cowboys and Indians magazine last month. Even joined her fan club!!!
And, I'm much like you--I think of animals and children, I guess because they have little or no voices at all.

Ya know......whenever I watch footage of 9/11 I always think of the service dogs first and who did or didn't make it. And not just the ones who were in the building at the time of the planes entering - but of the ones who searched after the fact. Don't misunderstand me in that I don't think of all the human suffering as I certainly do.
But whenever there is a fire, accident, etc. I always think of animals and children first. It's just my nature.
On that note, I recall a very moving piece on the horses that 'served' in the war and the hardship they went through. There is a monument somewhere of them and I was moved beyond words to know that someone cared enough to honor these gentle giants.

Our local SPCA had a big blow out adoption fest this weekend, in honor of the search and rescue dogs at Groung Zero. There were two (retired) dogs who had searched at the Trade Center at the festival, bless them, both grey in the muzzle, there for support. Over 150 dogs were adopted!
I read a lot about the search and rescue dogs at the trade center as an animal lover, but at that time, a shelter worker--really drove home the dedication of animals when loved, when supported. I've always known that special bond and was so proud to know that these courageous dogs and their handlers worked tirelessly, even when they realized there was little to no reward of finding anyone living.

I have a sweatshirt that came out right after 9/11 that I got from the ASPCA. A version of the American Flag is illustrated on the front with paws instead of stars, and written within each of the stripes are names of the search and rescue dogs that worked at ground zero.

I just received an email showing pictures of the search dogs still alive that were at 9/11. It's a lovely email with pictures of these senior dogs that served so diligently.
Excuse the mess & the noise, my children are making happy memories |
