I just had to share with all my favorite Farmgirls...you know I mean YOU!

Posted - Sep 07 2011 : 2:28:49 PM Kelda, I heard it was not good for the chicken to breathe all that dirt so that's why I did it. But I think it's also good for their digestion as they eat some of it. And when it gets muddy here it won't be so dirty. I will add more before we get heavy rain as they tend to kick it out of the run. I might add some more boards around the perimeter.

Posted - Sep 07 2011 : 09:14:34 AM Ladies, I have a question...
I see and hear a lot of people put sand in the bottom of their chicken run...may I ask why?
I'm new to chickens (but loving it) and building my chicken run now. It's a 8x16 space and I was just going to let them hang out in the grass...is the sand to manage the mud after the grass is gone? Or are their other benefits?
Thanks in advance for you help! :)

Posted - Aug 30 2011 : 2:11:23 PM Thanks, Linda, what a big job but taking advantage of the low water must be a boon! Sounds divine...relax and enjoy.
Thanks Paula, they seem to be super happy and so am I...I will probably bring in more sand in about a month as it will settle and they do love to dig!

Posted - Aug 30 2011 : 2:05:39 PM Great work!! Your girls look so happy!! I know what you mean about hauling sand. I'm still in the process of adding 9 50lb bags of sand to our girls' coop...backbreaking! I'm only doing half at a time so they can get used to the feel of the sand between their toes before it is all completely covered.

Posted - Aug 30 2011 : 2:04:17 PM Karen, what a great job! Its looks like a pro did it! I am 61, Il have a hubby who helps, but he really is at a loss when it comes to wood and building. So he is my second hand. Right now I am building a pier on our lake. It is down over 5 ft. from this drought and I have always wanted one. It will be a 40 ft walkway and a 12 by 8 landing. Not to big, but good enough for a cup of coffee or tea and a book. Or to play with the ducks. Well, congratulations, you deserve a good soak and a rest. Good Job! thanks for sharing Linda Farmgirl #946 |
