we brought tatoo home last night. he is very nervous. for 19 yrs he has been with my sister. he is 30 yrs. old and beautiful. egyptian arab. he has health issues. i will have a lot to learn. last night we locked him in the barn. i will take him out for a walk around here this a.m. he is a big boy. so i need some elementary horse books to read. i am thinking you farmgirls may know of a web site i could go to also. i am soooo excited to have him here. i am thinking he may be insulin resistant. when our vet gets back from his fishing trip i will test him. sure have a lot to learn. any ideas are welcome. happy days here sherrye

I don't know much about horses, but we just finished reading a book about an arabian--King of the Wind: the story of the Godolphin Arabian--the kids loved it, it was very dramatic!

he is not settled yet. i took him for a walk yesterday. in a few days i will turn him out on pasture for a bit. i will stay with him. kristi said maybe 30 minutes first few times. i want to ride him so bad. i know nothing really. so i will wait. he is so beautiful. happy days here sherrye

Glad to hear he doesn't look like a IR or Cushings horse. Usually Egyptian Arabians pass those issues by- not always but usually. I am sure with some helpful herbs and your loving care he will soon be belly ache free! Has he settled down any? Tala took about 2 weeks to settle down here in Billings when we moved her from Idaho.

Dr. Eleanor Kellon is a vet who specializes in these diseases and her site and the yahoo message board she started here: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/ECHorsekeeping/messages were who I went to with our IR mare.

oh kristi, i am so glad you know this stuff. could you please come meet tatoo. i am planning on blood work etc. he is wonderful. i suspect it since he has belly aches and runny poop a lot. any help would be happily received. sherry

I have had Arabian horses for nearly 40 years and volunteer for a rescue. Has he been diagnosed insulin resistant/Cushings? There is drug therapy for full blown Cushings. A lot can be done (particularly if it is just the "insulin resistant" stage) with dietary changes. Call the guy down in Madras/Culver and see if he has any Bluegrass hay left. You really don't want to be feeding him any of our beautiful, rich Central Oregon grass hay or alfalfa. Low sugar/starch is what you need for a Cushings horse. What is leading you to suspect insulin resistance? Did he have trouble shedding out this spring? Does he look continually shaggy? Does he drink unusual amounts of water? Have unusual fat deposits? Is he puffy in the sheath or eye area? Does he suffer from chronic (or acute?) laminitis? Here are some links I hope will help.

Very awesome, Sherry! Tala is straight Egyptian Arabian and they can be such wonderful horses! Egyptian arabians have been known to live well beyond 40 yrs old if they are cared for. How are his teeth? Make sure you get them floated when necessary and if he has lost too many you might need to feed him soaked pellet feed for the rest of his life.
Egyptian Arabians are highly intelligent and do not tolerate abuse (which I know you would NEVER do) and they love kindness. I am sure he will bond with you quickly!
