Oh Hens, I got woke up from a nap by my neighbor girl whose big dog just had puppies 3 weeks ago...seems 2 of the pups got into mommas food & she wasn't having any of that & bite them...one is ok but the other she must have gotten in the head & it was dying...the girl was crying & didn't know what to do or if she could put it down...I went over & the baby had a white tongue & gums & was breathing maybe 3-5 times a minute & crying like a newborn baby non-stop.....i realized it would have to be put down to stop its suffering so I had the pup in my arms & told her to come back to my house where I have chloriform I use on the chickens when needed....I have never had to put a pup down but am so glad I had the chloriform as it puts them to sleep immediately & then freezes up their lungs...but unlike the chickens it took a bit of time which really shook me up....I turned my back to the girl & told her she didn't need to see this, once it was dead I wrapped it in a dish towel with roosters on it since it was colorful & gave her back to the girl..together we went & buried it..... I went back to her house & re-checked the other pup who just had a small swollen area on the side of its head but was alright, she will watch it though...Momma now is only allowed in the room to nurse & her food will not be in there....the momma is food aggressive because before they got her she had been beaten & starved otherwise she is a great dog but I feel bad that this happened to the pup & to the girl......thanks for listening...Michele'

Michele,

I just read your post from the other day. I'm so sorry you had to go through that, but what a wonderful neighbor you are to have been able to help out in such a sad situation.

On lighter note, it was nice to see another farm girl who loves a beardie. I had one, but I had to put her down last summer when she developed this tumor above her eye. When it first started the vet thought it was just an infection, but then when he tried to cut into it to let out what he thought was puss, he found tissue, which meant tumor. I kept her until the tumor got so large and she was banging her head against the glass and then I knew it was time to put her down. One of the hardest things I've ever done, so I understand how it must have felt with the puppy. I thought I would get another beardie, but somehow, I just haven't been able to bring myself to do it. As silly as it sounds I still miss my little Sadie lady[:

just a note to tell you the neighbors other pups are growing & doing great...Momma dog has mellowed a bit but they still have her food outside the pups room & they are still only allowing her in to nurse them...I am planning to go over tomorrow to see them...can't wait to see them....they are sooo cute....& no I am not getting one....23 chickens, 4 cats & a lizard is enough for this old girl!...Michele'

So sorry this came to you today. I am grateful you were there for the pups and the little girl. Speaks highly of you that she came to you for help.
I know how shaken you must have been. Watching a birth is such a miracle, assisting a death of an animal in mercy is horribly hard, but equally a miracle of kindness. God bless you and give you peace about this.

Oh, that brought tears to my eyes. You are such a good person for helping that puppy to not suffer, and for helping that little girl who needed you. You did a very good thing that day.

update...other little pup is doing fine...think since there is no broken skin ect its just bruised but is back to eating/drinking & doing its puppy thing....
for comment on getting the momma fixed...they plan to, they bred her for this one litter....but they are taking precautions by only allowing her in to nurse every 4 hours.....

I have to say if I was in mind of another dog...which i am not, these are beautiful pups & will be beautiful dogs...but I am happy just raising my chickens & cats & bearded lizard...lol....but I will never say no to another chicken!!!!!

thank you all for your kind words, love & encouragement....michele'

Oh Sweet Michele - I know it is never easy when we have to do that but consider that you spared that little pup from suffering... Over the years I have had to do that for other folks and it is never easy but I remind myself that my pain in doing this only serves to easy another and for that I am grateful I can do it. I am sending you tons of hugs and give yourself time to feel bad - your owed that much. Blessings

been there, done that, and it always tears me up, I am sorry that you had to deal with that, but glad you were there for the neighbor in need, IMO, the momma dog should be spayed ASAP, cause she is turning on her own pups, next time it could be a child...

M, I am so sorry you had to go through that, but thank goodness you were there for them. You knew just what to do so they would not have to see the puppy suffer and the puppy would not have to suffer any longer.
You are one of the most bravest women I know, so full of love and kindness, I know the family is so happy to know you.

That was a terrible morning. I don't know what I might have done, but you handled it. I'm so sorry for those little things, but I've seen plenty a momma dog turn on her pups at the shelter. Mother Nature is a queer one.

I am so sorry that you all had to go through such a harrowing experience and that the pup couldn't be saved. I have had to put kitties and other creatures down before and it is always so sad. *hugs* I am glad that you were there to take charge of things tho. Bless you for your mercy, strength and kindness.
